RIP John Prescott

My mum, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago, got to know John Prescott down the years. Mum and my stepdad went out with John Prescott and his wife a couple of times and would send each other birthday and Christmas cards. My mum, who was a good judge of character and was picky about who she liked, really admired him. Mum found him friendly, charming, humourous, a great storyteller and compassionate about the working class.

As a country, we need more working people like him in Parliament and fewer career politicians from privileged backgrounds.

When my late father-in-law was a captain on the Union Castle line Prescott was sometimes his Chief Steward and union rep. Always made a point of saying what an impressive and intelligent man he was whenever he popped up in the news. The tributes by Hezzer and Alan Johnson on Radio 4 this morning are well worth seeking out. They reference his pioneering work in promoting major infrastructure projects, devolution, local government reform, Right to Roam & much else.
