RIP Terry Hall

Hmmm... Went to see Colourfield in the 80's. Hall came on stage accompanied by the strains of 'Glory, Glory Man United' which was met by deafening boos. He then sulked through a 40 minute set without uttering a word to the audience. As already said though, aside from the rag nonsense, his musical legacy is undeniable. Ghost Town absolutely nailed the feelings of isolation felt by ordinary people during the Thatcher years. To Terry's credit, his political convictions never wavered.

You could bring out Ghost Town now as a new single and it would fit our times now.........progress eh?

I'm shocked and devastated at Terry Hall's premature passing. I'm reeling. His music and lyrics are frequently with me and so many of us. I can't articulate how much The Specials mean to me as a mixed race person. I was 14 when they broke through in '79. In an age when racism was a particular menace (its always there) The Specials, and West Brom especially King Cyrille, were like shining beacons and inspirational. The multicultural nature of the Baggies and The Specials have been so important in so many lives - certainly mine. I needed them. We needed them. I'm City forever yet a little part of me will always love West Brom like I love The Specials.

Both made Britain a better place.

The Specials introduced me to Ska and how. Terry Hall's other work with Neville Staple and Lynval Golding in the Fun Boy Three is frequently with me - Farmyard Connection, We're having all the Fun (despite the reference to Stretford who he passionately supported) etc, Jane Wieldin (Our Lips are Sealed rings so true). I'm gutted that he can't enjoy his 60s for more years. I'm gutted that he can't be with us to make more magic Like Cyrille Regis, Terry Hall was taken way too soon. We only get so long...

Thoughts with all his loved ones. Rest in peace.

As Terry Hall would sign off...
Love, love, love.

Saw The Specials at a one day festival in Leeds in 1981. "Ghost Town" had just been released and it was a haunting song that could have been about many British cities.
Think it was a "Rock Against Racism" gig.
Although Terry Hall was the lead vocalist, Neville & Lynval were the better live performers. I think Terry Hall tried too hard to be seen as "cool".
Waited over 30 years to see The Specials again at a festival in Hungary. Once again the rest of the band gave everything to many fans who didn't know them from Adam ?
Terry Hall was still a miserable bugger, so at least he was consistent...

Think he had a lot of demons to be fair.

we are a generation that will never forget what our youth lifestyle was like in the late 1970s, early 80s under a Tory government with Margaret Thatcher the leader, music was the only way of speaking out and people like Terry Hall and the Specials wrote our feelings,

Rest In Peace, Terry Hall. you made our lives worth living and giving us hope we can be better

40 years on this also is as fresh as a daisy - the link? A Tory govt ruining the country

What a shocker.

Been part of the musical landscape for a long time.
Didn't he live in Bramhall (near Jah Wobble)? Bit of a Stella Street going on there.

RIP.

so, essentially you are saying we have to thank Thatcher for creating a cultural cauldron?...

I was thinking more on the lines of blaming them for the damage it did

I heard he lived in New Mills for a few years. Don't know about Bramhall, though.
