The more I think about it the more I think losing a leadership bid is the best of his options.
If he loses the General Election he’ll be permanently tied to (and blamed for) the biggest defeat of the Conservative Party’s history. The current prediction is for them to get 113 seats, which is miles below their worst previous of 131 in 1906.
Maybe even the first PM since Balfour to lose his seat.
If he loses the leadership, he can do what Johnson and Truss have done and just blame the deep state for ousting him before his grand plan to win the election took place.
The only problem is he’s so laughably bad at politics that I don’t think he would be able to pull it off on purpose.
