Roberto Martinez - new manager of Portugal (p 5)

Club football is more preferable to international for coaches. There are good Portuguese coaches like Ruben Amorim, but none of them are going to quit their jobs in the middle of the season. Howe is the best English manager, but he's not going to leave Newcastle to replace Southgate. Is he the best they could have got? I doubt it very much, but it wasn't like there were loads of good options available. It's very much a "safe pair of hands" appointment.

Martinez is about as safe a pair of hands as Eike Immel or Martyn Margetson.
