Portugal defended terribly. When Germany sticks the wingbacks out wide an throw more bodies up front, then defensively you have to have your wingers back them up and the midfielders need to get back. Semedo caught in no mans land because Jota and Bruno along with the midfielders rarely did anything to help defensively. No back 4 can handle that.
When we play and have Mendy on the wing, even if he's not great, the opposition are usually much more defensive minded and stick to the low block. Gosens better than Mendy, but we would still have problems finding a way though and because of the positioning, have a hard time when we're counter attacked on.

He‘s a wingback tho. Won‘t be as effective as a LB.
He wouldn't get forward as much but his pressing and intelligence on the break are assets that would carry over- as is his crossing.
Dont think we are getting a LB this summer through.
