My router is pretty old, I must have had it about 10 years now. It is getting somewhat erratic and runs warm, I don't know if that is normal or not. On a good day my phone will use it's WiFi off my broadband setting, on a bad day I have to use my mobile data which is like doubling up on subscriptions. But most annoying is that I can't get my smart tv to connect up at all whereas it did when tv was new 2 years back.
I am sure that the router is at the heart of the problem but if it is then is their any specific advice as to a replacement?
One further bit of info. I am on tradional line connection and not fibre if that should be of improvement.

Would be looking to upgrade older tech is much easier to hack into. Are you nearing the end of a contract?

Just change supplier if your current one won't give you a upgrade. I left virgin as they wouldn't give me a new one after 3 years . You can also get around £150 from topcash back if you sign up to a new supplier. I will probably go back to virgin after the two years with EE . After ten years I would imagine there's been loads of upgrades

I've got my WiFi with 3. 20 quid a month and it's like lightning. Their hub thing is free with it - no cables or wires, works off 5g signal. I'm in an urban area and across the road from a mast though so ymmv.

10 years you say, disconnect it take it outside and smash the fuck out of it with a sledgehammer/blockhammer ..

10 years old is pretty much ancient. In terms of performance, and importantly security it really needs to be replaced. It will be riddled vulnerabilities, and if you use your PC for online shopping or managing your finances you really need to keep your router current and up to date with software patching and updates.
