Because you'd need it for any Head of State, and to a greater level in most instances, i.e. that French President. There's no two ways about it, it's pretty cheap compared to any similar country. Which doesn't mean people should approve of the whole idea, just that cost isn't the best angle of attack, particularly given the monarchy is unusual in offsetting its costs through being a tourist attraction. The French or Italian President is not.
There are better arguments against monarchy, basically.
On the official figures maybe, but add the estimated (cos it's a big secret) £100 million policing costs and the financial stick is suddenly much bigger.
