Different when its somebody with a bog standard single surname wanting to be known by their first name. That just stinks of ego and an attempt to build a brand.

When you actually think about it, Sergio aguero is probably the worst offender for this, he had kun on his shirt which was nothing but a nickname from a bloody cartoon. But its Sergio, he is a god and he can do what he wants.

Why anyone would want to be known as that is beyond me. I want a name like Weghourst written at the back of my shirt, at least that word sounds like a huge German sausage.
 
Bet there won’t be any commentators / pundits though referring to him as Ruben and pretending they are his best mate

I agree.

The 'Trent' example is fair though. English players DO have surnames and should just use them. It's only because Trent as a first name is unique that it was allowed. Imagine Foden just asked for 'Phil' on his shirt.

Didn't Dele Ali just have 'Dele'? But that was something to do with not liking his surname because of his poor relationship with his Dad, IIRC.

Should sack the whole thing off and just go with the starting 11 wearing numbers 1-11 on a match day, with no names. Then nobody can get upset about it.
 
First time I ever saw this was 'Jordi' on Cruyff's shirt. The explanation was that having his surname on there would put too much pressure on him. Honestly, as if anybody watching him would even consider that he was related to Johan?

Only a matter of time before they have their Instagram tags on there...
 
I wonder what the governing body would say if every City player changed their name to Haaland but had a different initial. Italy's No 1 G. Haaland, Portugals Joint No 1 M. Haaland, R. Haaland, England's best CB ever (and only so because Dave Ewing was a Scot) J. Haaland, and so on!
 
Wouldn’t it have been better to ask this question on an existing thread rather than starting a new one? That way you wouldn’t have made a bit of a tit out of yourself
