Rugby World Cup 2023

Another one sided game this evening...

With the Cricket World Cup on and using a format that focuses on quality over quantity of teams I'd love to see an alternate Rugby World Cup played in the same format.

Top ten teams in the world.

Just like the Cricket World Cup have them all play each other once and then the top four in the table go straight into the semis.

Only thing I'd change is ensuring the teams go a week between games so five games a week rather than the nine they have in the Cricket.

There'd be so many more close games with this format.
You've still got Australia in there though.

It would take 3 months and the players would all be fucked.

It is a daft format for 50 overs, wouldn't be too bad if T20 and playing 3 games a week, but whatever happens after 5 games there are likely to be sides gone but having to risk their bodies for no reward. A bit of a nonsense.

The cricket one wasn't the top ten, it was the top 8, there was a recent qualifier and Scotland somehow managed to take throw it away needing a large loss.

Italy were abysmal. France relentless.

Should be a great quarter final tue Frenchies Vs South Africa. Ireland potentially have a decent root to lifting the Cup

We have to beat Scotland first.
Let’s not talk of such things until we no we’re out of the group.
I have an awful feeling Scotland fancy spoiling the party tomorrow.

How would that promote an interest beyond the top ten.
How does it promote the game around the world.
Serious questions.
It sounds like an interesting more compact format that probably would be overall, more competitive, but does that work for cricket.
I mean most the world wouldn’t even know when the cricket World Cup is on.
Cricket has more people watch it worldwide than rugby.

That doesn’t answer my question though.
How would the format promote it.
I mean rugby in ireland is behind soccer, Gaelic football and Gaelic hurling, I would say.
Ahead of cricket I would imagine.
How would you promote it by limiting the competition to those countries that are best at it, only.

It wouldn’t. I should have just quoted your last sentence about no one knowing there was a cricket World Cup on. I agree with the rest of what you say.

Japan and Argentina would be nowhere near a top 10 without the world cup helping them grow. USA have just turned pro and will fancy their chances in future if given the chance to develop by playing the top teams in competitive games.

Fair enough.
I would say that with where rugby stands in the pecking order in this country, the IRFU are doing a remarkable job.
They have invested at grassroots level and there seems to be a clear professional approach in management and a pathway to top level.
The same can be said for the GAA here although Gaelic games are amateur.
I wish the FAI could get their fingers out. The least said about them the better.

My point regarding the rugby organisation at the top level globally, surely they would be looking to promote the same professionalism world wide and get it at grass roots in as many countries as possible.

I have no,idea how that is done world wide, but I would guess seeing your national country qualify for a World Cup and performing on a world stage is huge for attracting more to the sport domestically.
