Russian invasion of Ukraine

Well as they supply grain to a huge amount of the planet yes I guess they are, plus if they fall because Trump fucks them off the that gives Putin the go ahead to expand into smaller non NATO countries and gobble up their resources, plus the fact millions of people will be subjected to a tyrant, so ye it’s pretty important for freedom.
Plus he will have a highly trained Ukranian army to move onto the next country of his choice..

North Korea come out of it with a battle hardened army and what ever military tech Russia gives them too. Currently it looks like missile tech to carry the nukes they have.

Very much reminds me of the ‘bread queues’ we used to see prior to the collapse of the USSR.
It was the bread queues that allowed Putin into power and reject the west after the first collapse.
Russia had a chance to grow and leave the past behind. But at the first hint of difficulties, the older Russians reverted to type.
Be interesting to see how their attitudes towards Putin change. He will go from savour to traitor within weeks with the older generation.

The Putin that Trump last dealt with as President was a very different version from today’s.

He’d been pretty flawless at carrying out his wicked plans up to 2022. He was respected, if not well liked amongst world leaders. And probably feared a little too. He was at the top of his game.

Now he’s turned Russia into a pariah state, is going cap in hand to North Korea and the Russian economy looks like it’s about to collapse. Plus this drill, drill, drill is going to fuck the Russian economy even more.

Be interesting to see how Trump deals with that change in the balance of power. I guess we’ll then know just how compromised he is.

2024 has been such a mental year.

Curious, honest question - how does one differentiate between excessive pro-Ukraine exuberance and reality or indeed the reverse when consuming posts?

My hosest - but not informed sentiment - as a very pro-Ukraine observer - is that Russia isn't in trouble at all and will continue to grind away; whereas Ukraine, its much smaller adversary isn't winning the war - and in spite of their heroic efforts may well ceed much of their territory in a peace deal within the next year or so - especially now that Trump is President of the USA.

Anyhow, that's my sentiment - and I'd much welcome accurately informed opinions with backing from major news agencies to the contrary.

‘Isn’t in trouble at all’ suggests not affected materially in a negative way, which has to be wrong.

It’s inconceivable that sanctions haven’t had an impact and there’s been a mass exodus of the nation’s talent to avoid conscription. And the numbers of casualties might not be as high as western estimates but irrespective they can only be properly characterised as huge, which will deepen Russia’s upcoming demographic crisis. And Russia’s military capability has been hugely reduced too, simply by an operation of simple mathematics. Plus the notion of Russia being welcomed back into the fold is inconceivable for the foreseeable. So their isolation will last at least a generation imo.

So whatever way you look at it, overall, it’s been an absolute disaster for Russia, even if they keep what they’ve stolen, and irrespective of the recent playbook on the battlefield. Agree it’s hard to tell how things are progressing at that level though.
