Sam Allardyce

Really setting the bar high going for a manager whose only quality is narrowly avoiding relegation.

yeh, Bolton finishing 5th were lucky to stay up that year

What was that 10 years ago? Since then his glorious career has been him sacked by Newcastle, sacked by rovers, West Ham where they were holding up signs saying "Fat Sam Out" and saying he was killing the club cos they hated his style of anti football and most recently Sunderland where he barely kept them up.

England have some exciting young players who could really do something, but no lets just hand them over to this winner.

Minority of Morons yes, there f*cking idiots. Same as the Toon fans that demanded Pardew to go when he was doing a decent job. Thankfully our owners ignored these idiots and he left us mid table, in Europe with a thankful Bilic admitting he has taken over a very good team.

Barely kept Sunderland up, FFS - what more could he have done ?!

you know nothing.

I know Allardyce is a loser who will do fuck all better than Woy did. You seem happy with mediocrity though so I'm sure you'll love his reign.

Perhaps they need organising properly then. It seemed to work for Portugal. I wonder how many of their supporters wanted Santos as manager?

I've never had BFS down as a yes man.

Would he tow the FA line?

For example, If England qualify for the WC and Sterling/Rashford/Allie get bananas thrown at them or other racial slurs. He's the kind of bloke who wouldn't be afraid to speak out about it whilst the FA want appeasement.

The same with picking players for shirt sales rather than for a tactical system that works.

i think the english FA want an englishman preferably and maybe sam deserves a chance? He does get a lot of negative press but not all his teams have played shit football and what he did at bolton was pretty amazing. The only trouble is that Sam isnt really a yes man is he? he usually says how he sees things which may upset some in the "Establishment"

maybe the FA are just thinking, "you know what, Sam cant do any worse than Woy so lets get him in and hopefully we wont have to pay him as much as roy because we know he desperatley wants the job"

A prophecy?

I don't get this Fat Sam love-in. It seems some people on here will defend him because he once managed the club they support. Doing their best to convince everyone else that he's a pretty decent manager when all is said and done. Sorry, I don't buy into that. Every club that man has been in charge of has played the single most dire, uninspiring football ever witnessed in the game. For every pass and move I've seen his teams play there are thousands more of hoof it up to the big man so-called tactics. Allardyce and Pulis are a total anathema to the game that I love, and for that reason I'd have to say a resounding 'NO' to him being in charge.
Why not give it to Eddie Howe? A younger man with fresh ideas who wants to play the beautiful game the correct way. As far as I'm concerned Eddie Howe is far more deserving of the hot seat than that odious neanderthal Allardyce and his Sunday pub league style of football.

Perhaps its because those people have actually watched fully how a Allardyce team plays - and it is nothing like you describe.

So tiring to read the same old crap people post about Allardyce, do some people seriously not watch football ?

He doesn't just play long ball, he mixes up all kinds of tactics, he varies game to game - i remember West Ham beating Man City a couple of seasons ago - with Valencia and Sakho up front and Downing play-maker behind, we run rings around City - no long ball was played that day. Yet still the tag sticks that he plays ''hoof-ball'' , a media tag that sadly some are all to happy to lap up.

His work at Bolton was remarkable, taking over a club struggling in the Championship to taking Bolton to 5th in the Prem and in Europe, they played some wonderful stuff with the likes of Anelka, Hierro, Campo, Jay Jay Okacha, Djorkaeff. He was way ahead of the times with the use of modern technology and players fitness - yes at times he resorted to long ball to K.Davies and Nolan, but sometimes that is the way to play!

He took over Newcastle and Blackburn and left them higher up than when he took over - yet with poor owners they got rid of him and paid the price.

West Ham. I remember not really wanting him, we were linked with Martin O'Neil and Stuart Pearce and to me, just seeing snipets on MOTD and hearing his a 'long ball merchant' i didn't fancy him - Yet... looking back, i don't think any manager could have done the job he did. We were a complete mess of a club, relegated to the championship with players jumping ship - Big Sam took the club by the scruff of the neck, got rid of the deadwood -somehow got Nolan to the championship and few more key signings and took us back to the prem in the first year of asking - the next season he bought in Diame,Jarvis and Carrol - we finished 10th! that was way beyond expectations. the following season with mammoth injury's was not great, finishing below mid-table, unacceptable with modern day fans, wanting instant results and Barcelona style football - more of the same for the following season having reached semi final of the cup and leaving us in Europe. Cant thank him enough for the job he did and Bilic has build on the foundations Big Sam made.

after us, he kept Sunderland up against all odds. They looked strong, quick and played good football. of corse though he just plays 'route 1 hoof-ball' to the big man - this time to the giant lone-striker Jermaine Defoe.

No manager will satisfy everyone, and fans will jump on his back straight away with a poor performance - But Big Sam is English, a good manager and decent bloke, he is passionate and has worked bloody hard to achieve where he is today. I for one hope he gets the gig.

Very good post. I think he is the correct choice and is certainly the best English candidate. Wouldn't be against a foreign manager but it would have to be one with pedigree and who understands English football, like Wenger or even Benitez but that's not going to happen.

Gough and Durham on Talkshite saying that anyone who doesn't think Allardyce is perfect for the job is a fool.

So now I am a fool to add to old, Northern, ill educated and working class for not agreeing with another bunch of losers.

Just as well - I think they are all tossers themselves.

What happened to 'I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it'. Some more tossers abolished it?

Big Sam is a good PL manager but nothing more.

The fact he wasn't considered good enough to take West Ham to the next level speaks volumes. The last England manager was incapable of taking Liverpool to the next stage and he found his level at West Brom. Swapping Hodgson for Big Sam would be a sideways step.

We need to be realistic and look at what ambitions we have for England. IMO, we have some fantastic young prospects our talent pool is certainly no worse than Portugal and Italy. We could easily compete with the Germans, Spanish and French if given the right manager.

Allardyce, alongside Pardrew, are without a doubt the two outstanding English candidates but both are managing clubs who would do well to avoid relegation. England should have far bigger ambition than that. Try and get a proven winner, someone like Hiddink or Mancini.

Their managerial track record shits all over Allardyce's and the only reason I can think of that anyone would choose Big Sam over one of them is because he is English.

What the PL have to try and do though is improve the standard of English coaches. There was a time, probably just after he'd left Bolton, when Allardyce should have been considered for a top English job. I know he went to Newcastle but after that disastrous stint, his career seemed to stall. Ever since all he has done is rest on his laurels and keep teams in the PL. That in itself is no mean feat, but it is not exactly inspiring. Redknapp had a genuine claim and IMO should have been England manager as his job at Spurs merited it.

Managers like Eddie Howe need to be given a opportunity to compete for honours. If not how will they be considered good enough to manage England?

Finally, I know people could easily say that I am overrating England and I probably am. However, I believe in ambition and the manager should represent that. If you have a mediocre manager then the team will never reach its potential.

Wasn't Sven and Capello proven winners at club level ?

The FA are going for him because he's cheap. Someone with foresight saw that sponsorship deals with McDonalds,Mars and Carslberg could be used as his salary.
