David McCarthy: Celtic must head off Greek tragedy and get Georgios Samaras signed up .
He has been at Celtic for seven years, yet no one outside the club – and maybe inside as well for all I know – can tell you much about him outwith the football pitch.
He is 6ft 4in, has long hair and a beard. There’s not many like him in Glasgow, yet how often is he pictured in the city, how many times has he appeared on the front pages rather than the back? The answer is none.
Georgios Samaras has found a way to swim in the goldfish bowl. He doesn’t give much away in interviews. He doesn’t discuss his personal life and although his girlfriend at the time of Euro 2012 was voted WAG of the tournament you won’t find the Greek striker swanning about with a different lassie every week.
It’s just not his style. He loves his club, that is obvious when you speak to him. He has become immersed in Celtic and in the city he has called home for seven years. He doesn’t do Twitter but he plays football well and at 28 is near the peak of his powers.
Before the Ajax game last week he gave a rare insight into what makes him tick. It’s not money, he said, and I believe him. He is well paid at Celtic and strikes me as a guy who would rather be on £25k a week and happy than £50k a week and miserable.
“If you play at an English Premier League club, finishing 11th or 12th, the only thing you will remember when you retire is the money.
“When I leave Celtic I will see my medals. That is important. I will be able to remember something good.”
He could quit Glasgow this summer at the end of his deal but the general feeling is he won’t. Samaras loves life at Celtic so he will pen a new deal is the assumption.
Samaras’s performances in Europe would enable him to have his pick of any of the top continental leagues, and England, if he felt he was being taken for granted. He would also double his pay packet although that would not be his motivation.
Taken from The Scottish Daily Record,ye just gotta love him.
