San Fran or New Orleans

I’m originally from the Bay area- I know New Orleans as well. Depends on your taste and budget, SF area is magnificent for many things

So, punching this back up to the top.

Due to logistical reasons (As we are going Vegas and LA) we have decided on San Francisco and the outbound flight has been booked. I have a few more questions for anyone who knows or has been to San Fran:

1 - Is 2 days/nights enough? We are arriving at approx. 9:30am on the Saturday. So would have more or less all day Sat, Sat Night, all day Sunday and Sunday night with possibly looking to leave Monday. Or is 3 full days better??
2 - Things I 100% want to do are - Alcatraz, GG Bridge, SF Giants Game (Sunday) Pier 39, China Town - Are there any other recommendations? Thing I'm missing?
3- Where to stay? We've seen a Hotel called the Axiom located at Union Square which seems reasonable, what is Union Sq like? Good location? Anywhere better?
4 - Car - Is it worth getting a Car? We are in LA.

Thanks in advance!

Never been but two places in the US I would like to visit. The Bible Belt can fuck off but California and the east coast up from the religious bit are on the list.

I drove from LA to SF up the Pacific Coast Highway. It's a long haul but some spectacular views. Worth breaking up the journey by staying over at Big Sur; I didn't but wished I did as 'er indoors was getting a bit bad tempered after 7 hours in the car. Worth having a car in SF to drive up and down the hills that you see in the films and to drive along Lombard Street.

Haven't been since '96 but going back this summer. We're doing 4 nights, I reckon 2 isn't enough. I'm hoping Union Sq is okay too, as we're staying near to where you've booked (looks a nice hotel that one). As for a car, we're picking one up on our last day and driving south. Parking at the hotel is $80 a night so not paying that every day.

If you want to go to Alcatraz and you already know your dates you should buy your tickets now. And bring warm clothes, SF is not like the rest of Cali, especially if you are going to be on a boat in the bay !

Thought San Fran was a bit overrated to be honest. Alcatraz would of been awful if it wasn’t for our tour guide. Good food there though.

Nawlins every time. Exciting, Edgy, colourful, hot, atmospheric, great food, steamboats, the river, music, swamps, history, architecture, hurricane cocktails, nuff said.

Went to San Fran in October just gone and loved it.

1. Depends what you mean by "enough" there's a lot to do and see!

2. Alcatraz - book tickets in advance of going, can do it online in about 10 mins. Very hard to get one on the day. Enjoyed the self guided tour. Try and do it early in the morning so it doesn't eat into too much of your day.
When you get back from Alcatraz, you're right there for Pier 39 :)
GG Bridge is great, also worth walking down to one of the small beaches (we walked down to Marshall Beach, great views from there)
Would also recommend walking down Lombard St, really cool. Also Walking around Mission District, Balmy Alley has some amazing graffiti - off 24th St

3/4. Not sure, we rented an Air BnB in Noe Valley, but we also had a car. Car was because we were driving out to Yosemite as well though, not necessary if just in the city, we took Uber's everywhere, much more efficient and no worries on parking :)

Also, if you like your beer, there's loads of great independent micro breweries to visit as well, Southern Pacific was a favourite.

Depending on time you have, you can get the Coast Starlight from LA to SFO, really scenic and some amazing views - train is fitted with glass viewing carriages too - and the standard seats are massive and comfy, but this takes like 10-12 hours, so depends on how pushed for time you are :)

Hope this helps anyway, have a great trip!!
