Sarah Everard murder | Wayne Couzens given whole-life sentence

Difficult one to call, this. The abuse of trust, the planning and premeditation, the targeting of a lone female, the mental suffering she must have endured, the rape and the destruction of the body collectively point to a whole life tariff, but his guilty pleas have to be taken into account for public policy reasons.

I'm guessing a minimum tarrif of 40 years, which pretty much amounts to the same as a whole life tariff. Imagine being nearly 90 and being released from prison after 40 years inside, in the unlikely event he got parole. Anyone would be absolutely bewildered and terrified
I suspect that, as a serving police officer, he knew that the crime would attract a whole life tariff and knew that the evidence of his guilt was overwhelming. Pleading guilty was just a cynical attempt to get 30 years instead of whole life imo. Thankfully he failed.

Good decision. He’ll probably top himself but I hope he doesn’t. Rather he spends 40 years rotting in a cell with the guilt eating away at him and wondering whether someone with a sharp object will get him
The guilt won't eat away at him because he didn't have a shred of empathy or remorse. Every emotion he has displayed since being caught has been self pity.

I don't think someone capable of doing that would feel guilt mate.

The bad thing is, he'll probably end up on the secure/medical ward of Belmarsh separate from other inmates living the rest of his life out peacefully, at least according to the account of a well known screw about what happens to high profile inmates:
