This is doing the rounds more than usual at the moment. I'm coming across around 5 infected machines each day for the past two weeks.
I wont post links but effective are the following if you do fall victim to this scam;
Combo Fix (available at bleepingcomputer.com)
Malwarebytes
Spybot
AVG
- that is run all of them as they target different threats due to the way each program is written, differently of course.
Delete temp files & folders, then empty any system restore files (turn off restore, then turn it straight back on).
*ComboFix will not run if AVG is installed so if you have the free version uninstall , run ComboFix then re install AVG. If you've got the Pro version just ensure you have your licence key to hand , it will be in a registration e-mail or call AVG for it.
All these programs can and should be run in Safe Mode if infected. Press F8 when the infected machine is booting.
-----------------------------------------------
The other virus we have seen lately is coming in via e-mail with a Post Office or DHL tracking notice message. A file is attached which gives the impression of a .zip file, in fact it is an .exe which if click runs and fucks up your machine pretty badly to the point that a reinstall of the OS (Windows) is a probable outcome.
----------------------------------------------------
Often asked for the best protection, or better Anti Virus than the one installed on an infected machine. There isn't and will never be a solution that will guarantee to prevent virus infection. My opinion is AVG or Bit Defender. NOD32 us also highly regarded although I don't use it.
Running Mac or Linux then don't worry too much about these issues although even with a Mac the browser can be targetted. For a PC Asus have pre Windows environment such as Express Gate, or even run Knoppix or Ubuntu in RAM - but then that's not Windows but lets you surf on shit sites without a virus.
