Scottish Guy arrested in Dubai, UAE

From timeout Dubai:

Alcohol
Alcohol consumption in the UAE is only permitted in certain designated areas, such as licensed restaurants and bars attached to hotels. Tourists and residents can drink in these locations without holding a licence to buy alcohol. However, it is highly recommended that you own an alcohol licence if you wish to drink in the UAE.

Someone who has consumed alcohol in a permitted area can be arrested outside of that area if for whatever reason this fact is brought to the attention of the police, or they are found to be drunk and disorderly in a public area. This usually occurs when bar-goers are involved in a car accident – irrespective of whether they were driving or not – or even when they seek the help of the authorities after having consumed alcohol. The law still applies even if the person arrested holds a valid ‘purchasing’ alcohol licence: it is best to remember that while an alcohol licence enables you to purchase alcohol, it does not allow you to drink it in public places or to be drunk in public areas.

From gov.co.uk

Alcoholic drinks are served in licensed hotels and clubs, but it is a punishable offence to drink, or to be under the influence of alcohol, in public. The legal age for drinking alcohol is 18 in Abu Dhabi (although a Ministry of Tourism by-law allows hotels to serve alcohol only to those over 21), and 21 in Dubai and the Northern Emirates (except Sharjah, where drinking alcohol is illegal).

Passengers in transit through the UAE under the influence of alcohol may also be arrested.

In public being the important word in that statement and i don't see anything wrong with that based on their culture.

The arrested him at the venue and then charged him with having alcohol in his system.

How often do you stay at a club until you are back to having zero alcohol in your system?
Not sure how they can do it, it's unreasonable and wrong. unless the arrest was for indecent behaviour.

Don't know all the facts of this story and lots seems to be wrong in the scenario regardless. But would doing something like this in U.K. be considered sexual harassment?

No, try being in a busy bar or a concert trying to get past people, you would be arrested 10 times over if this was the case.

Don't know the full facts but seems an OTT charge.

Now that is complicated for a simple soul like me. If i did drink alcohol, i probably would stay off it in dubai.

Just to add, i don't agree with the application of the law in entirety but people who visit should understand the risks if they are happy to visit dubai for a holiday.

I quite like the idea of people needing a licence to purchase alcohol. They should bring that in over here.

Well putting hands on other's hips should not be acceptable regardless of how busy the environment is and people should be organised and act in an orderly manner.

You ever been to a pub before an away game? I think you’d probably have a coronary.
