Scottish Independence

Scottish Tories and Tories as a whole ran on a ‘no Indy 2’ ticket and were roundly rejected by the Scottish electorate. SNP ran on a independence ticket and increased their vote share and seats. If Johnson has a mandate then so does Sturgeon. Blocking the issue just feeds into the SNP narrative. Engaging in meaningful discussions on further devolution, power sharing and a voice on Scottish issues on Brexit ie fishing rights would dissipate the narrative.
Its a nice idea Bob, but I don't think it will happen. Not sure Johnston is attracted to meaningful discussion on ...well anything really.

They could get themselves out of deficit and in surplus within a couple of months .... once they stop paying the oil revenues to Westminster and retain it themselves.

UK tax revenues from oil are what a couple of billion of £ if that? And a small proportion of that won't goto Scotland.

They'll lose that amount just in devaluation of whatever currency they dream up.

If you think that the UK leaving the EU is a mistake then Scotland leaving the UK is an even bigger one.

Wouldn't just be tax revenue though would it? they'd get the profit from the sale as well.

And as oil is traded in dollars cant see that would be a problem to them .

it's estimated that theres at least a £Trillion of the West Coast alone.

Scotland want out mate... they've had enough of Tory rule..... and good luck to them

They contribute 8% of UK tax and get over 9% of UK spending. They’d struggle to even reduce their deficit never mind get into surplus. Not only that, but the SNP are ‘committed to net zero carbon emissions’ by 2045’ which suggests stopping extracting oil! It’s like Sturgeon is the grand professor of hypocrisy...

Less than 1/5 of the Scottish population voted SNP in this election.

More people voted to leave the EU in Scotland than they did for the SNP this time!

I see Scottish Labour are now ditching their stance as a 'No Party'. A desperate attemt at rediscovering relevance, and probably too late, but a significant shift all the same. They will now allow MSPs to make a choice on voting for and promoting independence in Holyrood and their constituencies. Very interrsting, and could make that little bit of difference the swing hinges on. Or if it does stretch to beyond 2021, could make the difference in parliament. that would shift from being two independence supporting parties vs 3, to 2 vs 2, and a free for all of whats left of labour.

Similar arguments could apply to Brexit. Fact is they've had a brilliant election result that they see as a platform to make the referendum case on, and under our electoral system, hard to argue. Good luck to them.
