What are the key things to look out for when buying a second hand car? Obviously mileage etc is important but are there any other hidden things to investigate? Just seen a very nice Toyato Celica in a sexy black which would look ace on my drive :@)

Unless you're an expert (your post suggests not!) just get an RAC check carried out on it. This will highlight any probs & they will advise you whether it's a good buy or not. It will also see if there is any outstanding finance on the car.

lol, not like the old days any more matey.

Are there any ways of checking whether or not the mileage clock has been fiddled with? Its a 2002 car but only has 25,000 miles which seems too good to be true.

If you do buy it, and you don't get a RAC guy to come and check it, as its quite expensive to do .. definitely do a HPi check, these are only £20 or so

Make sure you look like you know what you're talking about and doing .. Check the oil cap to see there is no creamy build up, this could suggest a possible head gasket leak, check to see if there is any oil around the engine, there shouldn't be, again could mean the engine has been rallied to the max and its sprung a few leaks ..

Check the exhaust by putting your palm over the pipe and hear if it blows .. check for rust under the sils and wheel arches, check the tyres and when driving it, take it for atleast a ten -15 minute run to see if it overheats .. check to see if goes in a straight line without holding the steering wheel, check all the windows, mirrors, sunroof etc, lights, wipers, power steering .. fully lock the wheel and if it makes a noise you could have a problem ..

loads of things you could check for on top of this .. shocks, brakes, etc ..

How many owners? , also check the mot's and service history it will give you the mileage each year mot/serviced. Also if you give me the reg I'll find our threw a VMC check.

Check the exhaust by putting your palm over the pipe and hear if it blows (On modern cars now they have breather holes on the back box, and our techies tell us not to do that any more).. check for rust under the sils and wheel arches, check the tyres and when driving it, take it for atleast a ten -15 minute run to see if it overheats .. check to see if goes in a straight line without holding the steering wheel, check all the windows, mirrors, sunroof etc, lights, wipers, power steering .. fully lock the wheel and if it makes a noise you could have a problem ..

How much does a genuine extremely low mileage affect the price of my used Ford?
