Set pieces

seems to be a hot button issue these days. I am sure everyone noticed how on a weekly basis now teams are coming in to the Etihad with 1 goal in mind, to get a corner or a long throw in, try and walk on the keeper's toes as much as possible (and get away with) and fluke their way into a goal. Seems like most teams are training primarily for set pieces, spearheaded by the ones top of the league.
Incidentally, we have not scored a single set piece goal this season. In fact, we have not scored a single non open play goal this season -

My question is - is pep being too stubborn to try and master a set piece routine of our own? We clearly have the players for it and even if we didn't, it seems like we just aimlessly waste them with no plan. We hired a new guy in the summer if memory serves me right, guy who used to work at liverpool. Whatever he's tried to get us to do on set pieces has clearly not worked.

Another topic i want to talk about is given how brazenly every team these days seem to straight up just foul the keeper on corners and how often they get away with it, do we need to change something to counter that on defensive corners or perhaps is this leniency something that we need to exploit as well?

Wonder what our corner to goal ratio is compared to others.

Why not take more short as we have a disadvantage when it comes to height and physicality. Do low pacey crosses not suit us more.

We should have scored from about three of our corners on Sunday. Haaland had two free headers at the near post that he barely got any power on and another where the ball dropped right in front of two of our players yet neither of them got a shot off.

Foden has improved his corner taking. His technique has got much better and his quality of corner has become much more consistent. And he’s better than De Bruyne was, who, considering he’s probably the best high degree of difficulty open-play passer of the ball this sport has ever seen, his corners were bobbins.

We also should have had a penalty from one when Gvardiol was dragged down.

Even though he chose to shave off his ridiculous moustache, thus making my username redundant before it even started,
i trust him to know exactly what he is doing and personally would rather see us scoring glorious goals from open play than mithering about fucking set pieces.

Before this weekend's result, if you'd believe a lot of what is stated on bluemoon, we have a thin, shitty squad with no effort and blah blah blah, yet we are 2nd in the league.

Of course, there is always room for improvement and eventually maybe set pieces will become another tool in our locker,
but as i've said on other threads, our new set piece coach has to address not conceding goals first and foremost before he starts concentrating on attacking ones.

(no offence meant)

Both would be nice. It was mentioned at the weekend that we are the only team in the Prem that hasn't scored from a set piece.

We must have one of the biggest teams around. So much so, Arsenal weren’t really a threat from their set pieces at all when we played them.

Donnarumma, Gvardiol, Dias, Stones, Khusanov, O’Reilly, Nunes, Rodri, Nico, Reijnders, Marmoush and Haaland are all over 6foot. 7 of them are over 6’2”. Even Aké who’s only 5’11” is probably even better in the air than Dias who’s 3inches taller than him.

We’ve towered over a number of teams we’ve played this season attacking and defending corners and throw-ins.

We haven’t conceded a goal from a long throw-in this season and of the two conceded from a corner, neither were headers: one was a shot from outside the box and the other was a shot off the floor (and was arguably a foul on the keeper anyway).

I don't disagree, not at all, but there is an awful lot of new stuff being worked on in training
and attacking set pieces, whether we like it or not, is not high on the list of priorities.

Patience is a virtue - we are 2nd in the league and still working through new tactics.

I believe we’ve had 58 corners and NO GOALS so far.

And are we the only ones who haven't had a penalty yet? I've got a bet with my hubby that we won't be awarded one single pk in the pl this season.

Unsure if we're the only ones, but as Pingu says with that stat, it is a bit weird.

2nd highest number of touches in the opposition penalty area too. Strange not to get a pen with numbers like that

Be nice if refs called a few fouls for all the holding, pulling, picks and blocks, but at the moment all anyone seems to care about is seeing more goals being scored.

I’d venture at least HALF of Arsenal’s set piece goals have at least one, if not multiple, foul(s) associated with them.

Lastly, as a forward in my day, I used to complain about the level of protection keepers used to get, but it’s a bit ridiculous that they’re constantly being obstructed, held, shoved, picked, etc., from corners now.

Okay, we were ranked 20th last year but maybe the squad has changed so much we will be higher now.

It makes sense defensively also, as all the defenders are taller and the attackers, bar haaland are shorter. although that shouldn't matter on corners, so clearly we are doing something wrong.
