Ok Techy guys, please help.

The aim is to have an FTP setup on my home computer, and connect to it either at work, or via my sisters computer. I want to be able to have access to one folder and download paperwork, pictures, videos etc etc etc. Is this possible? How would I go about it?

Cheers guys.

serv-u or filezilla server client.

Serv-u is paid but i can sort that for you, filezilla is free and simple to setup.

I'm not at home atm but later i will post in more detail if you need it :)

Hi mate, quick response, cheers!

I've downloaded filezilla, but I just cant get it to work where I can download something from my computer to another. Annoying.

TCIB is your man for sure. I will add i tried and failed miserably with filezilla server set up so bought

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/share/sharecenter/dns-320-2-bay-sharecenter-network-storage-enclosure" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutio ... -enclosure</a>
so i didnt have to keep burning stuff for family who are even worse than me with I.T

works well enough as a browser and or ftp server

Cheers TCIB, I look forward to getting this resolved, it's annoyed me for months! Ha!

All ive managed up to now, is setup a server using filezilla, so that my laptop, can 'login' to my computer and download the files Ive given a username access too.

I go to filezilla type in the host as 127.0.0.1 username password and port 21 and hit connect. Everything works fine. What I can't do, is do this from a friends or work etc.

your using a loopback i.p on your lan.

google whats my i.p, that will give you your external i.p, you prob on a dynamic (changing) ip too. you will need to set up something like Dyndns to auto change it when it skips.

Ok, some of that makes sense.

I have seen this DYNDNS thing before, is it free? What am I supposed to be doing there?

yes its free to create 1 host, that will give you something like tinysever.sytes.net to use instead of using ip numbers for external. and update dns server to resolve your ip back to that site name when it changes.

i got stuck at port forwarding my router (it is shite) so tcib will prob sort out more tech stuff

Gave i a google and couldn't find how to do it free on DYNDNS but I've managed to do it on Dlink, which apparently shares with DYNDNS?

Anyway:

I setup a new host

Host name I enter Tinymcfc

It says browser IP Address - It gives me my IP Address already populated

Then theres a box for "New IP Address" in which I have to put something there, what would I do here? Or am I on the completely wrong track?
