I dont see that he has too many options to be honest, take last night for example, he did lose it a lot by going long aiming for Tevez but it's better to compete for it up there than dropping it into the midfield.
The full backs last night were richards and Zabaleta, Richards isn't comfortable in that position and rarely gives the keeper an option to throw it to him and Zabaleta was playing out of position. De Jong will come short but invariably will play the way he faces and so it will eventuallty return to the keeper via a cente half.
Numerous times we had the ball around the half way line only to return to Given, Via de Jong, toure/Kompany. Why go back? Because they prefer to pass on the responsibility to the keeper. Yes toure last 20 mins took more responsibility, bringing the ball out from the back but earlier unnecessary passes were played to the keeper.
