Should Class A drugs be legalised in UK

Every day there are reports of Kilos of Cocaine & Heroin being seized & Tens of thousands of pounds being confiscated plus dozens of Drug dealers being arrested but it seems there is a never ending supply of drugs & dealers & life in drug land carries on as normal
Billions of pounds & years of resources have been spent tackling the situation all to no avail
Our best bet to tackle the herion crisis was when troops were in Afganistan ,but to gain support of the tribes people & their elders a blind eye was turned
Hundreds of people get beaten up & killed by people involved with drug gangs & hundreds ordinary people are criminalised for possesion & prisons are full of people involved in the drugs trade
Leagalising drugs ain't a vote winner & there is not an easy solution but the present system of tackling the drug crisis is a disastor
While there is a demand there will always be a supply
The tricky bit is how that supply is managed
 
it's weighing up the cost of reducing military, policing and national security spending (certainly in the States where they get to use this as justification) against managing it through the NHS etc, revenues but then drug cartels coming for people and probably revenge in different ways.

I think the big private contracts will always win somehow.
 
Well, the 'War on Drugs' certainly isn't getting won.

Am currently reading Roberto Saviano's ZeroZeroZero which is about the worldwide trade in cocaine. It will be interesting to see what he has to say about this question. Saviano's view is that this global industry is reflective of and expresses the worst excesses of capitalism. It's an intriguing if not entirely convincing thesis.

The other book I would recommend for anyone who wants to explore this territory is David Simon's The Corner, which looks at how the US drugs policy has failed spectacularly.
 
Yes. Safer ones should be available via shops like Booze / Cigs and taxed sensibly, too much tax would drive people to a black market.

Harder ones ( Heroine etc ) being via prescription only. that allows the NHS to target those at need of help and the users know what they are getting and dont have to mug people on the streets to get it.

for me the benefits are many. Here are a few thoughts.

1) Drug deaths are regularly caused by drugs being cut with other things rather than the drugs themselves. or are of such varied strength you never know what your taking. When you get it from a shop or NHS you know its clean and you know the dose meaning far less overdoses/deaths.

2) Drug gangs / drug related crime become mostly a thing of the past quickly, you will always have a black market and people not wanting others to be known users etc.

3) Prison over crowding becomes reduced a lot because of point 2.

4) Less overdoses hitting the NHS front line etc.

Cons.

Makes it easier to become addicted and all the long term issues that come with that ( like with Booze / Cigs etc )

Pity politicians don't think the same,or if they do they to scared to air there views
