I think you might be missing the point a bit on the kit deal, mate. The best deal for the club is not going to be dictated too much by who makes the best product. If we had Fred Perry making the shirts I'm sure it would be really popular with local fans and we might shift 20 or 30k more shirts to fashion conscious Mancunians, but in the grand scheme of things, that won't make that big a difference to us.
The thing Nike give us is exposure and distribution.
I go to the States every year, sometimes twice a year. When we had Umbro produced shirts, the quality was excellent, but you would very rarely see them in sports shops in the States, whereas you'd see rag shirts, Arsenal and Chelsea everywhere.
Last summer I went to New York and Miami and City shirts were displayed prominently in every single sports shop I went in that sold football shirts. City had a big display in Niketown in New York.
If we had a contract with Fred Perry we would get nowhere near that level of exposure or distribution. Even a huge sporting corporation like New Balance can't get anywhere near Nike or adidas in terms of worldwide distribution.
The growth in shirt sales for us is going to come in the US and Asia. To expand our supporter base and reach as many potential new blues as possible, we need to be aligned with a manufacturer who has the distribution network to be able to reach every corner of the globe. Nike are the best company for that, adidas second, and the next nearest competitor comes nowhere close.
Wasn't Umbro still part of Nike in 2010 though.Agree with what you say but I was in Niketown in New York in 2010 and the City display was the biggest there. The Umbro made shirts in all their glory were the first thing that could be seen coming up the escalator.

It was.
My point was that the exposure we have ( in Niketown ) is not a new thing.
I think you're missing the point.
If we went back to Umbro now, or Under Armour or whatever other brands are the current flavour of the month for people who wear football shirts, we wouldn't be getting the same exposure as Nike give us. Whether it's new or not.
Not exactly like we are desperate now for these huge deals. Imagine in 2 years under Pep if things go according to plan our deal will be on a different scale. Patience with this one i imagine is probably worth it.I've just checked and we have 2 more years, after this, left on the 6 year deal, so unless we break the contract the only options are to wait a couple of years or try and re negotiate and extend the Nike deal.
