Signing a player on loan

I'm guessing it's down to 1 of 4 things:


1 - Players of trophy winning calibre are rarely available (they often arent)
2 - Loans are often done to ensure of player quality (so we dont want the obligation to buy, as is so regularly done nowadays)
3 - Loaning is rarely done by top clubs, as they regularly have the money to buy (and selling clubs know this, especially if losing a player who they'll have to buy cover for).
4 - We already have complaints from player management that the squad is too big, loaning players would just add to this

There are rare cases where this doesn't apply, as you say Palhinha is one, but they're rare.

If the players are a problem in their club, top clubs won't step in. Too risky, and solving a problem for their opponents.

Happy top players at happy clubs aren't available anyway.

If the player is top - say Donnarumma in his last contract year - he would ask for a new contract, as he has the power to insist.

We could ask why Forest didn't loan Macca for 1 year, or why generally clubs pay up for players with 1 yr left.

The players have a say as well, I don't come on loan, new contract please if you want me.

On point 3, if you consider them top PL clubs, arsenal, Chelsea, liverpool and the rags all have brought players in on loan in the last couple of years.
There are restrictions on loans between PL clubs which probably holds teams back.

we probably don't as we seem to alway do long term planning and also Pep seems to like to keep faith with his squad even through an injury crisis.
Add to that most players we would be after would not be available for a loan and it is probably why.

saying that anyone for Mo Salah for 6 months ;-)

I think we are the team in the PL who have gone longest without taking a player in on loan. That was probably Frank Lampard.
On the other side of it, we loan out lots of them.
It's just getting harder to loan within the PL and not that many available who meet our standard.

Why do we never use the loan system? Unless I’m mistaken the last time we signed a player on loan was 2011/12 season, David Pizzaro

I can't really think of a situation where we would have benefitted from a loan, or where a player was available on loan and we would have stepped in.

Last season was arguably the one where we could have done it, rather than spend on so many new players. Even then, I imagine it would have to be a player Pep knew well, or an unbelievable opportunity, and our need was defence and midfield and I'm not sure the players of the required quality and attitude were there. Kimmich? Maybe that ex Fulham midfielder? Not sure those deal were on a year ago anyway. Although if Van Buyten was available he would have slotted right in ;)

Pep also strikes me as a guy who wants people all in for the cause. Live, breathe and dream the club, the fans, the team. If you know you're off or not certain where you're heart is, it's a problem. Just ask Kyle, Eddie, Leroy, Raheem or the others who we open the door for regardless of ability.

Loans at the top clubs only really happen for 2 reasons, 1, it's an emergency situation. Generally because of a major fuck up in the planning prior to that window or 2, they have financial issues and the loan is just a way of delaying the payments. If a title chasing side is making loan signings, it's invariably not a good sign.

If Rodri isn't fit by January we will really need another midfield option as NG can't play every game and we've seen what happens when he goes off injured. I'd look at the loan market but let's see.

Our PL rivals ( and the rags) have no problem loaning in players when needed.
