Sir Waistcoat FFS (P65)

I know I am in a small minority here but while yes he ultimately fell short, I have an abundance of respect for what Southgate did on a diplomatic level. There's a lot of revisionism here - for several years during his tenure he genuinely brought the country together and restored a healthy kind of national pride - something all our politicians could never achieve, and nor has any England manager in a long time.

Whether that deserves a knighthood isn't really for any of us to say, but there is a lot to like about Waistcoat. It's not about rewarding failure, it's about service, and nobody can criticise Southgate for his lack of service. He represented the country at the highest level on the international stage with class and dignity and that deserves to be recognised.

He is a proper gentleman in a sport awash with flashy arrogant cunts and there's a lot to be said for that.

He probably isn't an elite level football manager or coach, but IMO we could do far worse than putting him in charge of the FA for example, or even in a role at the DCMS.

This is bollocks.

England matches have been getting large TV viewing figures long before Southgate became manager but just because a lot of people are watching an event on TV at the same time doesn't mean there's peace and harmony across the land and everyone's singing Kumbaya together.

Please, do point out where I mentioned TV viewing figures.

Good post mate and I completely agree. He was a victim of his own success in the end. We had very low expectations after years of hope ended with misery. Big Sam had lasted 60 odd days and it was a disastrous time. And little by little he managed to build a bit of hope again. A connection with the fans, some good memories and firsts for generations of England fans. Winning a penalty shootout, getting to a WC semi final. Getting to Euro's finals.

But as is always the case with us fickle football fans we then expect. And then he's judged for not getting us over the line or getting the job done. What was once admirable becomes tiresome or a stick to beat him with. He went from being loved and applauded for the way he spoke to completely destroyed and criticised for it.

But he brought good times, he just wasn't quite good enough to get us over the line. But that's been true of all but one England manager and we've had some very very good ones with very very good teams so that context is important. He took a team with Maguire and Phillips to the Euros final and only a shootout cost us. Not too shabby!
