Site problems?

Site is fooked when there is any sort of traffic........will be off for days when we win the Champs League next year :-)

Sorry, I had to reboot the server. Apologies for the downtime, should be fine now.

Yep. But we were told the last time this happened seriously (Herman confirming he wanted to go?) that the problem happens when something (news-wise) crops up out of the blue, and that when they can predict a busy period they can get the lump hammer out and ''fix'' the server. Surely today would have been anticipated as a busy day on here?

That is the case, but I've been really busy with work this afternoon so didn't have chance.

Or even one of the mods? I would presume that there is (at least) one mod who is ''present'' at any given moment, to handle complaints etc. When problems like this crop up, then they would be able to do the necessary tweaking on the server. And today at around 4:30-6:00 would surely have been flagged up as a potential problem in waiting.

Damocles is the only other one who can do the necessary tweaking on the server, but this was purely my fault.

I was online but was busy doing my actual job, and gambled that the traffic might not be too severe as a lot of people will have been commuting home from work at that time. Obviously that backfired, for which I apologise.

The actual downtime was only 15 minutes or so, the rest of the time the site was running slowly but the server was still up.

Part of the problem is that upgrading the server as required always involves 15 minutes downtime, as the database has to be completely stopped whilst the tweaks are made. I usually try to do it at as quiet a time as possible to keep disruption to a minimum, but that's not always possible.

Compared to last season , the problems are now minimal, as you will have noticed during games and when signings are announced. In the past this would result in downtime of hours, whereas now we can handle much larger numbers, but we'll always experience occasional problems, as all busy forums do.

Agreed. It is better than it was last season. It is just VERY frustrating when it happens at just the time you don't want it to; today it was just after Napoli came out of the bag (bowl?). It was one of those *sigh* moments. Why can't it happen when we lose to Everton, or after the bloody community shield? Thanks for answering anyway Ric.
