Sky HD

To start with HD is not High Definition at 1080. Modern PC monitors and projectors are already 1400 therefore HD is at best an improvement on old telly but still way behind monitors. Samsung have now brought out a large screen monitor that can be used as a TV with a resolution of 1400. The downside is that it costs about £1300 but as we have seen hardware costs come down very quickly once another producer brings out their version. So far as HD telly is concerned today my view is that if you have a good quality TV and watch on Sky there is very little difference in HD and normal Sky. Save your money until true high definition arrives.

It's broadcast in 1080 you numpty, so viewing it on a 1400 line monitor isn't going to invent an extra 320 lines of info.

I have a Sony 40" LCD - 1080p but only 50Hz (2 years old)

Would it be worth paying extra for HD on this set - I think probably?

Would be even better with 100Hz plus but I don't really want to shell out on a new set now.

wil be ok mate aslong as its full 1080p and use a HDMI cable your good to go.

Agreed - also as long as you sit nice and close. 10 feet away = waste of time.

Thats correct mate, hence you need FULL 1080P not 1400 etc as your not getting full value. And SKY HD is true High Def.

Im a Virgin Media Engineer, I can honestly say HD is far better. If you cannot see the difference you either have the wrong equipment or it is not set up correctly, all HD is transmitted in 1080i so you need a tv that can display 1080i. Also not all HD programs are recorded on HD cameras, it just upscales the picture and this is where people get it wrong you have to be watching a true (recorded in HD) programme to appreciate the difference.

There is a diffrence in quality from a program originally recorded in SD and broadcast on a HD channel to a true HD recorded program, its the same differance between a Bluray and DVD played in an upscalling Bluray player.

Sky HD EPG highlights all HD recorded (true HD) programs in yellow so you can tell which are upscaled or not, if your watching a hd channel and your struggling to tell the difference again you either have the wrong equipment, wrong setup or your watching a upscaled program.

Equipment and setup are vital, hdmi leads 1080i spec screen min.

Football in HD on BBC HD, ITV HD or Sky HD is amazing.

Get it ordered and enjoy it.

Not quite right, only programs recorded in true HD 1080i (not P) are true HD, Sky do broadcast programs on HD channels that are Standard Definition (SD) and the software in the STB upscales it. Which is visably inferior to true HD, Sky let you know by highlighting the programs that are true HD in yellow on the EPG.

nice reply W, i noticed that on sky1 HD when simpsons cam on with big black lines down the side i thoght wtf, but then realised what oyu put, old programmes not done woth HD cameras are only slighty upscaled. Then on Thursday night i saw the 1st Simpsons done in True HD. I nearly dropped my tea it was absolutely crystal pin sharp quality. Also all the TV's at the time were mainly 1080p and and not i whats the major difference?

The Samsung set is in preparation for more programmes being watched through the internet and not broadcast in the conventional way - Hence the better resolution. Technology moves on.

You must be getting confused mate - there's no such yellow marks on Sky's EPG.

SKY HD is amazing, plain and simple. people who say otherwise, dont have it, or dont have it plugged in correctly!
