Never smoked myself but trying to help the mrs quit.

Anyone else quit and whats the best way to go about it?
Did you find it easy or really tough?

I've heard mixed reports about those patches and the chewing gum. Is there some sort of pill you can take nowadays as well??

Any tips??

Cheers

Get those Champix tablets through the NHS. It's not nicotine replacement Therapy so the actual drug that smokers are addicted to isn't used to wean you off them. They just stop you smoking. Its usualky a 3-4 month period of using the tablets (the first 10 days you use the tablets you still smoke but you start to realise that they taste like shit and teh smell starts knocking you sick), but the doctor can give you more if you still feel like you need them. There are a few side-effects such as being bit tired at some stages of the day and also give you some mad dreams (I had dreams about Zombies most nights, but this just got me over the fear of being eaten by the undead and I could easily twat a few zombies should the occassion arise).

Scowy is right too. You do need willpower. If she wants to give up and uses the Champix then she sould be smoke free pretty soon. It is such a relief and a sense of achievement to do it as well. Good luck to her.

I read once that smoking craving last about 5 minutes, which is good to know (even if it aint true). Cos when you get a craving, you know that the craving isn't gonna carry on until you give in and smoke a cig, but that if you can hold out for 10 minutes or so, you're craving will go and you won't feel the need for a cig.

To stamp out bad habits I often read up about all the bad effects and it can help keep me focussed. e.g when I see a donut for example I don't see a tasty treat I just see simple carbs, fat and a very high GI

So read up on the bad stuff and tell her about it, but don't bother telling her about lung cancer or any of that shit, she'll already know and probably doesn't care too much. People these days are probably more concerned about yellow stained teeth, smelling badly and pale, wrinkly skin.

Are the Champix tablets a standard course of medication - as in are there different forms of it or is it the same for everyone. i.e would the doctor prescribe it depending on the persons medical background?
Was just thinking about getting the tablets for her through my GP as she finds it hard to get time off work.

Nicotine replacement didn't work for me, tried everything, sheer will power is the only way (incidentally this is why I still haven't quit!)

I've tried pretty much everything but the longest I ever went smoke-free was on Zyban pills for about 8 months (admittedly I felt great, but just couldn't keep it up).

The best piece of advice I can give to your wife/girlfriend is NOT to enlist the help of a partner. Very bad mistake.

Get a grip! If it tastes good then that's all that matters, there's plenty of time for worrying about cholesterol etc when you're old and fecked! How do you pay such attention to the food you eat, and I couldn't give two shits, yet you're a fat bastard and I'm a lean, mean, left footed machine?!!!!

BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Awesome

I don't worry about cholesterol incidentally, I just like to be fit, strong and in good shape. Maybe if you ate properly you wouldn't be such a little munchkin and you could have played centre half for the Bluemoon 11 a side?

Or maybe not...

Basically yes they are just a standard course. You start off having 1 x tablet in the morning for a week.
Then in the second week (which is when you'll be having your last day of smoking - around 10 days into the course) you have 1 x tablet when you wake up (this can make you feel a bit sick for 10 minutes, but eating before popping the pill stops that anyway). The when you get home from work you pop another at about six o' clock. The tablet strength for weeks 2-12 are stronger than week 1 and the first few weeks are where I started having the mad dreams.

The doctor (or the GP nurse in my case) will check medical background (nothing too personal or anyything) and my nurse took a monoxide lever test every two weeks (I was there for about 10 minutes each time I went to see her). You'd be best off getting your missus to go herself. If she can't get time off work then get her to tell her employers that it's for their benefit too, beacuse it is. It's proven that smokers have more sick days than non-smokers. Also, it seems a bit of an infringement of her rights if she isn't allowed to go to the doctors.

This sounds like the Zyban I took. If it is the same stuff it's possible to suddenly develop quite a nasty allergic reaction, this happened to me after 9 weeks. Apparently the risk of that diminishes if you're a bit of a lard-arse.

The best thing i've tried is ALLEN CARR stop smoking book.
You continue to smoke whilst reading it and then you'll just find yourself hating it.
I gave up using this method and it really works.
He also has clinics that you can got to £150 for four hours and you'll walk out a no smoker, money back guarntee.

Not the slightly camp comedian.....

Damn it, I'm pretty sure I've got that book here somewhere. I might have to give it a go, I believe it's had rave reviews.

buy a 20 pack.. smoke one break the rest and throw them in the bin. Repeat until you feel like an idiot for wasting money. Trust me you'll stop smoking fairly quickly.

I ended up in the bin at 4 or 5 am on the 1st day after I quit, made a roll up from the broken ones.. fuck me that was bad.

Never smoked since

fooled around with it when I was younger, lucky I never got addicted. I remember when I spent time in Spain I picked it up since every man, woman, child and dog smoked.

I remember being in a gym watching an aerobics class. Sure enough as soon as the class was over the instructor lit one up right in the gym!
