Soccer Aid 2023

You could get 5 random people off the street and it'd be the same show. The whole point of celebrity shows is that you get people doing something that isn't their talent and get to see how they react, and because they're the sort of people who are comfortable in front of a camera, in theory it should be better. When they only appear on camera from the back of a stadium, it's hard for anyone's personality to come across, so you just end up with a bunch of people who kinda fancied themselves as a footballer growing up genuinely trying their best. Basically you've hired a comedian for your event and they've not told a joke. What's the point of that?

I suppose anything that can sell out 70,000 tickets each year and attract enough TV viewers to raise nearly £15 million between them, has a point to it.

It’s clearly not an event geared towards hardcore football supporters but there’s a sizeable amount of people who obviously enjoy it so I’m sure it will carry on each year for now.

Well yeah, if it raises money for charity, you can't argue. But I think often people will watch/buy any old shit if it's going to charity. I'm just saying as a spectacle, it's a bit shit. A charity single might raise a lot of money for charity. Doesn't mean we can't say the song is shit.

I’m certainly not trying to deny you your opinion that it’s shit. But I am saying despite you been a football fan, and it been a football match, you’re not the target audience.

So you have hired Ricky Gervais

That was fucking awful wasnt it
Yeah. It's a typical example of someone who wasn't really a stand up having a go at it. He could always write a decent stand-up show because he's a good comedy writer, but because he never had to come through the clubs, he couldn't think on his feet in the same way that a proper stand up could. Can you imagine Billy Connolly running out of things to say?
