Soton have a nerve

I'm not having a dig at United or Liverpool here but the facts are they have more fans around the country.

Much easier and cheaper for Somerset rags and scouse to get to that game than for the fans in their home cities.

They may take more fans but what will the atmosphere be like. Based on the recent derby doubt United will make any noise.

I don't think what they put was too bad. Maybe because we are challenging for titles they expect us to compete with United and Liverpool in terms of mass support but that's not the case. We have a good hardcore fan base but not huge in numbers. Probably on the same level as Everton, Spurs, Newcastle etc and they would have exactly the same issue with a Sunday kickoff, live on tv at the other end of the country.
Don't know about Everton, they take up their full allocations everywhere like Liverpool Arsenal and the Rags do.

True.

Although strangely United are one of the better travelling sets of fans for atmosphere but their worst away atmosphere is at our place for the derby for some reason. Don't know why. Intimidated? Different fans because of different allocation rules? Dunno.

Our away support is up there with the best of them, end of.

and always has been.

they make me laugh these little clubs. they hit a bit of form for a season or two they think they are billy big bollocks. they fill thier tiny ground and take up all the allocations in away games with us , utd etc. once they drop off, and they will, it will be 12k tops and once relegated less than that.
I get your point and that would be true of a few clubs (Stoke's average attendance for all the years they were out of the top flight was around 14000) but Southampton's average over the two years they were in the third tier recently was about 21500. Not as good as Norwich, but not bad.

Last match At Maine Road was Southampton, we gave them a reduced ticket allocation and they were pretty pissed off about it, seems it was a tradition to have a good turn out for the last game of the season. For the next couple of games at St Marys they reduced our allocation.
Liverpool, Arsenal, United, do have a big nationide fan base so a early Sunday Ko will not affect the support they bring.

They also had a cup final the week after. City were subsequently fined for the reduced ticket allocation which was for the Gene Kelly stand with the whole North Stand allocated to City. Saints fans were selling their tickets to City fans so they can't have been that bother

City were ordered to reduce ticket prices for their first visit to CoMS also, but they didn't reduce our allocation at St Marys.

We took 3,170 there the following game for a 3pm, nad the last one before they went down 2,030 the year after for a 12.45.

The poorest ones for me were in 2006/07: Everton 2,036 (3pm tickets around £24 to 27), Wigan 1,961 out of a 5k stand (12.45 £35) and Chesterfield 1,659 (7.45 Weds £15 - standing area half empty).

However there were a lot less idiots going then and it was more enjoyable.

It's gratifying to see our 'proper' fans keeping the flag flying on behalf of everyone else...

Can't praise enough the supporters who put in such effort to support our team. I used to be one but too old now.
I couldn't agree with you more I am 68 going on 69 but was a regular away goer in the days you just turned up at away grounds and paid on the gate.

At least you knew that the kick off was 3pm on a Saturday and you could arrange transport well in advance - train to London and Maynes or Finglands coaches for the rest.

I am bloody sure that the overall cost was a lot fairer in those days - entrance money, travel, food and drink.

I think the Wigan game was the one where fans purposely didn't go to protest at the ticket prices. Whelan even admitted he got it wrong and lowered them the next season so it worked.

Everton two weeks before was £10 cheaper, similar crowd. There wasn't even a semi-organised protest at Wigan, I think the fact it was on telly and City's away form was poor was as much to do with it as anything, obviously the £10 price rise didn't help.
