Southampton (A) Post-Match Thread

I said it earlier in the season and I'll say it again, Sane has been a bigger loss than Laporte. The need for natural width couldn't be any clearer, we try and play through the middle of teams and sometimes you need to play around them.

Not arsed about the result at all, Southampton fully deserved the points just for the sheer effort, they might not have our quality but that was a proper team performance tonight. Well done Saints.

Maybe so but we could end the season with only a Carabao cup win and with this squad, thats nothing to write home about.
9 defeats in a poor league, so far, we should be better than that with the players we have.
Everything depends on the two cups, win one and we've had a good season. Lose in both and we've had a dire one

Probably one of the only things the Glasgow pisscan said (many years ago) that I remember agreeing with... is that there are only 4 trophies to win in a season and if you win one of them you’ve had a good season

So, if we end up with just the carabou cup, especially if we qualify for the CL too, which we will... we will have had a good season

Obviously the CAS verdict could change that totally

come on matey the last 2 season have been like dream land ? a blimp and some hard games is not questionable really the drop off was going to happen, and coming 2nd to liverpool in the league and then league cup winners again still in the fa cup and champions league its not a bad season is it

The league has been a a bad season for me.
Kind of expected after midweek. All signs of a team emotionally shot after exertions of last 2 amazing seasons. We simply can’t keep the intensity game in game out. I forgive them though and next season will be different.

When is next season due to start? We don’t have a great deal of time to put it right if it’s Sept. There are lots of questions for Pep to answer currently.

whoever we sign will need to bed in very quickly.

ten years ago if you said we won the league and still every fucker is moaning i would have given up on football and city

A freak result considering the opportunities, including 5 big chances as defined by OPTa, due poor finishing, good goalkeeping, good defending and bad luck or randomness with all the deflections and blocks.

City xG was unsurprisingly more than 3. So what? Well, the probability of winning with xG>3 in a game is very high.

xG of 3 or more is also not particularly common in the PL. This season:

Liverpool 3 times
Leicester 3
Chelsea 2
United 1
Wolves 0
Arsenal 0
Spurs 1

So 10 times in total for those 7 teams. All resulted in wins and total goal tally was 35 in real life goals and 5 conceded. An average of 3.5 real goals scored and 0.50 goals conceded.

But City are the masters of big numbers for xG. Whilst those teams managed it 10 times combined, today was the 9th time this season alone. A real indication that we create chances like no other team.

In 17/18 we did it 7 times, winning all 7 with 44 goals and 4 conceded.
In 18/19 we did it 8 times, winning all 8 with 29 goals and 3 conceded.

In 19/20 we've now won only 6 of the 9 times >xG 3.00 and scoring 26 in the 6 wins and only conceding 2.

Aside from the freakish loss today, the other 2 were the draw and loss against Spurs where we were v v good in both games but didn't get breaks.

Shit happens. Better today than last Thursday.

if finishing 2nd and already won the league cup and still in the fa cup and champions league is a bad season matey ? than you must go to the doctors in the morning and ask him for some of them glory hunting pills they are handing out to arsenal and united fans for the past 7 seasons

Pep decided to change both fullbacks and leave our current best 2 midfielder sat on the bench till the 2nd half.

There in lies the reason we lost control of the game. Pep must think it was the right thing to do risking the 3 points in the hope we win the FA cup and Champions League.

Also lets hope we get this C/Back left back position sorted out for the start of next season..
