Southampton (H) | Post-Match Thread

From The Telegraph....

It was, as Phil Foden said afterwards, a “strange” game, with neither attack having to hit the heights to unpick some curious defending and bizarre decision-making, even if Mahrez’s goals and contribution for the third were dazzling. But there was nothing stranger than the failure to award Foden a penalty shortly after the half-hour mark when Alex McCarthy, the Southampton goalkeeper, swiped away the City midfielder’s standing leg.

Graeme Souness and Chris Waddle said Foden had been “too honest” by just about staying on his feet, and there is little doubt he should have gone down. But it becomes difficult to turn around and blame players for diving or tumbling theatrically when they run the risk of honesty getting them nowhere. It was hard to understand how referee Jonathan Moss had missed it but even more bewildering was the video assistant referee Andrew Madley’s failure to overturn the decision.

The official explanation was that, because Moss felt McCarthy had got a touch of the ball and Madley could not determine that was not the case, the decision stood. Foden said he would continue to act honestly but you would not blame him if he thinks twice about staying on his feet the next time he is in this position. “I’m an honest guy and I never like to dive, I always like to stay on my feet but 100 per cent I thought it was a penalty,” he said.

Guardiola was in disbelief. "It is just incredible that penalty was not given,” he said. “One day they are going to explain why. I do not understand it. It's incredible that in four-and-a-half-years we have won everything ourselves. No-one has given us anything.”

It's unrealistic to expect VAR to get everything right but every other game has a talking point. It's failed no question and we don't need any more time to finesse it.

I am sure in years to come we will have technology that works but at the moment VAR is not working. A shame that a wonderful performance by Riyadh has been overshadowed by VAR again.
Sod all to do with technology. That was human stupidity at work.

Again, it’s hypothetical anyway as it didn’t happen but the law clearly states that it would not be a red card. Here is the law:

“Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offending player is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.”

but you are missing the point it was the last man and a clear goal attempt this is the underlining thing ? forget the going for of the ball ? he did not touch the ball and stopped a clear goal attempt ? like i said if ederson does that on rashford what would be the outcome. that's right red card and pen

If City are crowned Champions, then at the end of the season we should lobby football and use what influence we have to suspend VAR. Surely Manchester City and Pep Guardiola carry some weight in football?

I believe FIFA are trialing alternative offside algorithms so it seems to me that changes are afoot and naturally we know technology will have a growing influence in the game. VAR has failed, and next season, if fans are back, VAR is going to get more important. It's one thing experiencing a VAR delay on TV another when you are at the game.

I remember vaguely that the Premier Leaue clubs met towards the end of last season and there was reported to be a lot of unhappiness with VAR but they agreed to give it an extra 12 months to bed in. Surely now we have seen enough?

I can only think of one club who may like VAR and that is Man Utd. Why would any other football club be in favour of VAR?
As stated many times, VAR is not the issue, never has been

It's a team sport Kaz. If we don't win the game that could have been a costly error by Phil. He wouldn't have been diving if he'd stayed down and would probably have got the penalty. Sad state of affairs but thats just the way it is.
We would have missed the pen anyway;) Foden not going down has put a spotlight on the corruption we otherwise would not have seen.
