Southampton (H) | Post Match Thread

Honestly.. last year was unique. Chelsea and Dippers.. won’t drop many points against teams outside the top 4 this sesson.

if we have a similar first half of the season this season.. we will struggle to make 4th imo.

COVID meant the season was very condensed and the teams with the deepest squads benefited. We blew everyone out of the water during the notoriously tough fixture period (late December - mid February) as we had a far deeper squad. Also we have the most technical players and complex approach to games… no fans and 5 subs basically turned the games into training games void of emotion.. it played into our hands and was a huge contributing factor to our post Christmas dominance.

Also Chuck in that Chelsea had Frank and no striker and Liverpool literally had no defence and we were always winning the title once our form clicked.

Freak season.. don’t expect a repeat.
All the big 4 are going to have to reach 87 -90 points to have a chance of winning it in my opinion and having to play each other twice that's going to be impossible. They are very well matched. But something has got to give- Immovable object v irresistible force. For all these , big squads need to be used with minimal injuries. A lot of draws between those and its anybody's title. We should see something of a pattern by beginning / end of January. Long long season. Pep will play his part . If we don't win it we will have a say in who wins it .

i wouldnt write this team off just yet , we are quite capable of beating both Tuchel and Klippety , we need Stones or Laporte back , Rodri in midfield and Foden & KDB to also start , and see where that takes us.
If we had a striker mate we would easily win the title but it’s a massive mistake to not get on .

Full on dogshit that. We were very fortunate to get a point, Southampton should have won and might have but for cowardice at the end.

We don't have any change of approach when our usual game isn't working nevermind a plan B. We're not capable of sustained pressure on their box late on in tight games, they didn't look like they were struggling to cope at any point today, they had us sussed and could have defended well into the night.

We also lack match winners, mahrez used to be one at Leicester, he has been moulded into something different, I don't see Grealish as one, kdb can be and foden is but that's it. Sterling was until he turned into a waste of kit.

I don't get why others are mentioning our start last season like it has relevance unless we're expecting the same things elsewhere. Do we expect Chelsea to be shit until Christmas? Do we expect Liverpool to capitulate for 4 months? Do we expect united to be as shit as they was? Do we expect us to go on a 15 game run again? Those are 2 precious points dropped, United played poorly against them away and still won, Chelsea and Liverpool will brush them aside.

We now have to go to Stamford Bridge and anfield and win just to keep pace. Nothing positive to take from today. The fans turned up, Pep and the players didn't.

We were well off it today. Southampton stopped us with their pressing and disciplined approach. Credit to them they fully deserved theor point. The game became very fragmented and bitty - every time we looked to try and build some momentum there seemed to be an injury stoppage. City weren't helped by their continuous sloppy passing which seemed to permeate the whole team. I can't remember McCarthy making a single save before the Foden effort. Gundogn, Sterling, Bernardo all very quiet today. Fernandinho unfortunately was harrassed and pressed into numerous errors and had to be replaced he played like a 36 yo.
A point was arguably all we were worth today. Southamton and Hassenhuttl suffocated the life out of us.
