Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales | Resigns (p 34)

Some pretty strange whataboutery takes in this thread.

It’s not surprising when it’s the usual suspects though.

Pretty sure if a woman came up to me happy with the work that had been done at my employers and I planted one on her out of no where, that I’d be dragged in for disciplinary action.

The fact that people are defending an action like that is slightly disturbing…

what has he done which is so bad that he is being treated like a sexual predator. I know he kissed the girl but has he done somthing else .

Why doesn’t everyone kick off with men when they do it to other men? Each of these instances were unexpected plants on the kisser from one man to another who didn’t know it was coming:

And they received very little media attention and never got a mention on here.

That’s^ just one of those celebratory football kisses that you see every week. So why do we treat men differently in this situation than we are the female player? This recent one from the women’s WC was less of a proper kiss than all those above.

So goal celebrations, pats by the manager, fans hugging players. Encroachment without permission.
Let's look at everything. He got it wrong, clearly, but Christ, if this isn't a sign of the rush to be offended times. Headline news. He'll have to go and he probably should for his own good. Everything will be different now.

Did any of you read my OP?

This is merely the latest in a string of problematic behaviour when it comes to the women’s team, involving pretty much everyone in the coaching staff and the FA, and Rubiales himself has a long history of accusations of sexual misconduct going back years (many that went through the courts) that the FA quietly ignored. So much so, that many players had originally refused to play in the WC unless the Spain manager and many members of his coaching staff were removed (they eventually backed down when Rubiales refused to do it).

More over, the biggest determinate of why this has blown up is the fact that he not only refused to apologise when it was made clear that his behaviour was unwelcome and highly problematic (and representative of the overall misogynistic and sexist culture the women had been enduring), he doubled down, going after all of his accusers, calling anyone criticising him “false feminists”, giving an absolutely ridiculous Francoesque speech, and promising to give the manager all the women players hate a four year contract extension.

If you can’t see why the kiss, the crotch grab, and the subsequent behaviour is emblematic of an emboldened misogynist at the helm, believing he can do whatever he wants and the women should just accept it, I am not sure what else I can tell you.

Also, regarding the question about why male players forcibly kissing other male players doesn’t garner the same reaction: because it is entirely fucking different.

The male players are colleagues, to start, unlike the topic of this thread, which was effectively a boss forcibly kissing a subordinate (in front of millions of people). And I would go so far as to say the male players in the pictures posted likely “expected” and “accepted” that behaviour from their teammates based on previous experiences far more than Hermoso would have from Rubiales.

I would also wager that many men apart from those examples don’t actually feel comfortable with that behaviour but also don’t feel comfortable speaking out against it, either privately or publicly. Absolutely no one likes to be forced in to doing something they don’t want to do, particularly in front of other people, which brings a since of humiliation to the entire affair.

And, even beyond that, the power dynamic between men and women has been and continues to be completely different, especially in Spain and this women’s team in particular. So take the discomfort of how some men feel about being forcibly kissed and multiple it by millions and you get the common experience of women.

Men have generally been able to do almost anything they want with women for thousands of years with little in the way of consequences. Barring a matriarchy here and there in the annals of history, that has never been the case for women with men.

The result of that is that men are still in far more positions of power relative to women, and still unfortunately largely enjoy a dynamic of dominance over them, even as younger men become more enlightened and aware of gender equality.

Rubiales forcibly kissing Hermoso on the lips, in front of millions of people, was a power move. He knew everything that had gone on before the WC. He knew how unhappy the women players were with the coaching staff and with him for refusing to remove them and forcing them to return to play got them in the WC. He knew that they would try again to force change after winning yhe tournament, as they would have a bigger platform and thus far more leverage. And now, even in the face of the backlash, he is indignantly and belligerently standing by his behaviour.

He was making the statement many misogynists make when they see the world changing around them and they feel their dominance may be slipping away: “I am in control; I own you ****s! Know your place!”

Like I said, this wasn’t an isolated incident, and I explained that in the OP. And it is unfortunately also representative of a deeply rooted problem in Spanish culture that we still struggle to resolve.

If he'd have apologised unreservedly straight away then it might have played out differently. Instead he has doubled down and now accused the player of lying, and threatening legal action. His conduct has been totally inappropriate, and his position is now untenable.
So if he'd apologised for something he didn't believe - all would by fine.
OK - I'm clearly out of step with this thread. Leave you all to the condemnation and vilification.
By the way he did apologise and both parties stances have become somewhat distant from their original statements on the matter. She's has a lot or peer/contemporary pressure pushed upon her, just as he probably has.
A sad situation after a very impressive victory. Overshadowing a very successful tournament - or perhaps that's the goal. Hope we can at least agree on that

His previous for being a sex pest should at least point you in the right direction if you’re wondering if this was just a one off out of character kinda thing…

He didn’t apologise.

He put out a nonapology apology which is in vogue with PR firms working damage control.

Anyway, read my OP and my reply to your post, as it gives background on why this was not an isolated incident.
