Spare money

I felt really good about myself until I read the OP now I feel a failure. I only have 15,000 spare cash, where did I go wrong?

It’s 1.5% across the population of premium bonds and given some people win £1m, that means the average distribution is hugely below CPI/RPI.

There will always be the odd person that gets lucky and makes more than inflation but the vast majority won’t. No serious investor ever says “yeah premium bonds are good”.

How long are you wanting to put the money to one side? If it’s under 3-5 years then do a cash isa in a term deposit with a bank and you’ll make around about inflation. If longer then go for an equity ISA and a nice balanced portfolio and you should do 5-9% pa. Vanguard Lifestyle 60:40 fund is dirt cheap and has done very well.

In answer to your question we are fortunate that we can just keep that aside for a long time without dipping into it and adding a substantial amount to it every month. Will have a look into vanguard today. Seems a shame to put it into a bank and get 1% max

I can vouch for the Vanguard funds, doing very nicely for me.

It’s sadly what’s left of inheritance money mate. Since getting a life changing amount it doesn’t feel as good as I thought it would :(

Before the unfortunate event we had 2k in savings and felt proud as fuck. Haven’t told any friends or work colleagues because I imagine many people would have the same reaction as you, which is not what i intend to do.

Keep on going mate
