Spurs (H) 2nd Leg - Post Match Thread

Thank you to everyone that went last night, it was a wall of noise at times which tingled me in all the right places. We won, played well and I expect that trend to continue. Be proud blues, be proud. We are responsible for some of the most exciting games in the history of football.

The linesman is not meant to flag when it's marginal.

That needs to change. If it is marginal, they should flag if a goal is scored and then let VAR decide. If there's no flag the goal should then stand. The flag would hopefully prevent the sort of cruel and unusual punishment we endured last night. Sure it would delay some celebrations of perfectly good goals but surely better that way round.

I’ve had to wait until today to post because I was so gutted last night. I won’t be saying anything that others haven’t already but I do find it strangely cathartic. I thought the handball goal should have been disallowed. We were, however, architects of our own downfall. Normally totally reliable players had brain farts (Kun with the penalty miss and Laporte) and Spurs were sharp enough to punish us. Our attack was superb, unplayable at times. Our defence not so good (though I thought Walker was terrific). Onwards and upwards, we still have lots to play for.

Walker, KDB, Gundogan and Sterling were immense last night. All the players were up for a fight but sadly that passion turned into rashness for some (Mendy, Laporte)

Same here - I was prob the only one who didn't celebrate the Sterling disallowed goal in the North Stand.

Just knew he was coming back from an offside position, so knew it was going to VAR, was hoping my eye was slightly off but knew it was close.

Only frustrating part was that it was a poor back pass which Bernardo got a touch on but never intended it as a pass.

I agree, VAR is being used incorrectly. There is no consistency the ref should review anything that is referred to him on the pitch side monitor, he did for Llorente but not for Sterling. Above all else VAR is supposed to be used when there is a clear and obvious error. The linesman didn't even flag and the ball fell into Aguero's path by way of a ricochet it wasn't played to him and the last clear touch came off a Spurs player so VAR shouldn't have even been consulted for the offside in my opinion.

Moving forwards though VAR is going to be in every game in the very near future and there will be plenty of times when it works out well for us.

What really stinks for me is the away goals rule as that needs scrapping its outright unfair just like golden goal was.

Fantastic game last night but the manner of how we lost really hit the players hard you could see that, I just hope they can pick themselves up for Saturday because we need to win. What damaged us last night more than anything was the 1st leg and Peps team selection on that day (playing Delph who made the mistake and Mahrez) clearly he was thinking of the next league game which we won so it was justified I guess. The reality is you cannot underestimate the power of the away goals rule although I feel that it should be scrapped just like golden goal was because lets face it its unfair. 4-4 on aggregate says we play ET.

Laporte had a shocker last night and Ederson didn't play great either, perhaps because he could see that Laporte was having a wobble I don't know.

There was one criticism I have of Pep last night and that was he brought Fernandinho on too soon when we had the attacking momentum, he should have waited for another goal before making that change in my opinion.

VAR worked well up until the offside call, Llorente' goal was fine it did hit his arm but wasn't deliberate and was in a natural position so I don't think we can argue that one, the ref communicated well with the viewers both in the stadium and at home and we could see him reviewing it on the touchline. When it came to the offside I don't know what happened, he never reviewed it himself, BT never showed the replay either and watching it now its dodgy. Eriksen plays it into Berno and it hits his ankles and loops up into Aguero's path, is that offside? Berno didn't exactly play it to Aguero I know he's good but come on, the last clear touch came from a Spurs player. What exactly is the rule on ricochets?
Mark Halsey knows about reffing than you and I will ever know. He says definitely handball. More to the point, he confirms that the ref only saw one angle - he didn't see the behind the goal view where you can see the flesh on Llorente's arm ripple as the ball hits it.

Just got up am rough as fuck. Great atmosphere and the drama at the end was incredible and painful. We lost the tie in the first leg if we are honest. Great atmosphere incredible game

Great effort from the whole team but When was the last time Ederson made any kind of good save ?

Mendy was awful last night. Laporte was punished for 2 mistakes. He's been solid all season though. Kev and Sterling were on another level. Sadly I think we have seen the best of David Silva. He's lost his magic. We've been blessed to have him here for so long.

The first leg cost us ultimately. Aguero puts that pen away and we are talking about a semi final. Not blaming Aguero at all but Pep needs to look at the team selection and how we played that night.

Don't think we'll ever win this competition. The God's are against us. Last season with VAR we'd of gone through and this season without it we'd have gone through.

Gutted. But lt can be forgotten when we bring home the treble.

My understanding of offside is that if the Eriksen backpass doesn't hit Bernardo and goes to Aguero (in an offside position) the goal would be given because you can't be offside from that backpass.

Yeah he'd have been onside if Bernardo hadn't touched it but I think Bernardo's touch actually diverted the ball to him.

Yeah I know what you’re saying but answer me this.

My dad is 74, recovering from having half his kidney removed two weeks ago (cancer), was too tired to stay up tonight and is going to watch it “as live” when he wakes up at 6am. The poor fucker is going to go through all of that, he’s going to celebrate the last minute winner and then he’s going to be so upset, as we all have been.

What the fuck should I do? It actually hurts my heart to imagine and know what he’s gonna go through. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone, let alone a poorly old guy. I’m half wanting to text him and tell him to call me before he watches it rather than let him go through all of that when he’s not well.

I’m sat here, two hours ahead of you lot with no clue what I should do. As I say, it’s pretty cruel either way.

Hope hes ok mate. My dad had a kidney removed years ago and he used to watch recorded games 'live' as well. But I would have definitely have put him out of his misery and told him, health issues aside as well lol

Yeah the camera angle thing bothers me it really does. VAR is not being used consistently the ref needs to see all angles before making the call and he needs to see all reviews on the pitch side monitor after all VAR is to be used to challenge clear and obvious errors in judgment. He never looked at the Offside and that bothers me more than anything, someone else made that decision for him.

He pulled a worldy off the other week v West Ham. Had nothing to do all game and they could have stole a point and we would behind the dippers now hoping they let us back in. He’s a good keeper, you look at any other of the top six’s keepers they’ve all dropped clangers this year. Unfortunately he is in the position when you make a mistake it’s magnified ten fold.

Domestic treble will be quite some achievement. Full strength and full on from now

I should also say well done spurs. I was surprised how much bigger they were than us. Son is some player. Good luck .

Yeah we are out but proud of the way we attacked the game and the atmosphere was incredible.

All the media will jump on Pep's failure but Pep can't force people to score penalties or to not make mistakes.

Spurs are through fair and square, they scored 3 goals at our place, we didn't score any at theirs.

Let's move on!

Working away in Edinburgh and so Bluemoon advise was to watch City in the 3 Sisters bar. Thinking it was a place where City fans from the area would go. Fucking rammed with Liverpool fans !! Not great when you celebrate like a Loony when Sterling bags the winner only for hundreds in the pub to go mental when VAR was given offside. Horrible night, great game but can’t help but believe UEFA are bent !!
