Can’t argue with that.

I stayed sat down when there was a minute’s silence for George best and some old timer started giving me a hard time for it. I wasn’t tryna be edgy but I’d come to watch a football match not attend a funeral and Best wasn’t worthy of my respect anyhow.

Whether I was a royalist or not I think a tribute to a head of state is a different kettle of fish and I would act accordingly

The Queen was a keen sportswoman . I am pretty sure she'd not want people's sports to be cancelled . It gives fans a chance to communally show some respect (unless they are scousers).
When Diana died it was the media wanting to cancel everything wherea we just need to Keep Calm and Carry On.
Plenty of time to show our respect on the day of the State Funeral.

I think his point was (in your example) more that in church you would just not sing (like i do too) but are respectful of those who do. You don't turn your back, boo the hymn or sing something different.
