Spurs Thread - 2023/24

My abiding memory of many of our games back then was how bad they were. You were shit. We were shit. Now you are very good and we are very good. I like it

I don’t feel worthless at all.
Calling City and Spurs both “very good” is either very harsh on us or very kind on your team.

Wouldn't say mid-table is 'shit' and neither would i suggest that nowadays Spurs should not be described as being on the same level as City.

You might have considered yourself mid-table back then. We were relegation fodder.

Maybe we are not as good as you but we are very good.

That 3-3 draw showed that. Any player on the pitch could have played for either side. There might have been margin differences and improvements/degradation but there was no material differences.

Doesn't matter whether a fan thinks a club is big or not. Its what you win that makes you feel good as a fan. That's what counts , you know it and I know it. A nice shiny new stadium is no substitute for winning things.

That's bollox and you know it, you yearn for a trophy just like we did. If you want to kid yourself your new stadium and the fact that you call yourself a big club are substitutes for winning a trophy, thats your choice. But they're not! You're just an average football fan putting up with mediocrity for years, just like many others.

Spurs were one of the many Premier League clubs that pushed for the introduction of FFP. Your misplaced belief that Spurs will be Premier League champions any time soon won’t come to fruition.

Every time Spurs build an half decent team the likes of Bale, Madric, Walker, Kane fuck off to elsewhere to more successful clubs. How do Spurs break that chain? They have a billionaire in Joe Lewis, trouble is he can’t invest his money like Mansour and Abramovich did because of financial fair play. Spurs pushed for these measures and can never be successful because of it. Your owners are helping out the teams in red. I stand by point that it’s at the expense of Spurs, Everton and Newcastle did it as well. They are suffering in different ways to keep the old order in place of Liverpool and United. Surely you can see that?

I don’t agree. (In the least surprising news ever)

When Levy took over, Spurs were perennial relegation strugglers, the brand have been destroyed by Sugar. We had gone from the club that Paul Gascoigne choose over all others to the laughing stock of the division. WHL was intimidating and atmospheric but it was falling down. The training facilities were championship standard. We were going the same way as Sunderland, Pompey, Leeds and indeed City. He was struggling to make any progress throughout the 2000s.

The only thing he had was a large fan base and the income that provided. FFP saved him. And Spurs. It bought him a little space and protection from smaller ambitious clubs. It was only after FFP that he started to make progress.

Will we regret it? Who knows? If it fucks City and Chelsea, then no, we won’t. If the Qataris or Meta buy Spurs then maybe we will.

I am not sure I am making a moral judgement. Spurs have benefited from a financial advantage both now and in the past. The original point I was making was in response to a post that stated Spurs could never win the Premier League. I disagreed with that. Maybe the Qataris buy us. Maybe they buy Liverpool. Who knows? These are the vagaries of fortune for a football club. To illustration this I pointed out that it is possible (to what degree I accept is debatable) City could find themselves in Tier 3 again for non footballing reasons.
Talking absolute bollox. Spurs win a league?

I dare you to say that to someone without laughing!!!!

City in Div 3???? We have been over this. Are you Jamie Carragher? Maybe time to go outside and get some fresh air? Might erm put things into perspective. I am not sorry that you are another jealous deluded opposition supporter.

Good luck with that -:)

Do you actually understand how financial fair play works? You can’t just turn on the spending taps and go out and buy a new team if you haven’t got the balance sheet to back it up. This is Spurs who made a £50 million loss on their last accounts, they sold Kane in the summer so it might balance it back the other way slightly on the next accounts. So you’re telling me that Spurs will be able to go on a major team building program in the next couple of years and start pushing for the Premier League on the back of losses over the previous years?

Even if the Qataris or Meta buy your team it doesn’t mean they can go out spending like City and Chelsea did before financial fair play was implemented. Do you not understand this? Do you not see this at Newcastle who have owners with bigger pockets than anyone else. Their progress has been slow compared to City’s and they cant go shopping for top level players and have to be more frugal with their money. Jeff Bezos could buy your club and it won’t make a difference because of the the rules Daniel Levy pushed for to stop teams like City and PSG with wealthy owners.

Your club pushed for this and I have no sympathy for you, Everton and Newcastle who also did who find themselves in different situations because of it. Your whole hope seems to be on City ending up in division 2, it won’t happen because the people who own City are a lot more cleverer than Richard Masters. Even if we did we’d probably end up winning the league in 4 years time and Spurs would still have nothing to show for it.

I remember every single time we played Spurs pre 2011, we would be mocked for "winning fuck all". One or two other chants too. A clear insinuation that our support and the club were worthless or not worthy of sharing a pitch with Spurs (yes, the last league title win in 1961 Spurs). No other fanbase at games would give us so much stick for being unsuccessful. Possibly the most arrogant fanbase I ever came across.

With a bit of introspection, it only right those fans feel worthless as their club has not won a trophy of any note for 32 years.
Damn your memory is better than mine . All I can remember them singing is . 'Oh when the spurs..'

Surely that is my point. Chelsea and City spent wildly. Allegedly outside FFP rules. Spurs didn't. Mainly because they didn't have the money. But also because they worked within FFP. It helped Spurs - we were able to move from the bottom half to the top half of the table because we had more income and more spending power (within FFP) than those teams around us. Now Levy has Spurs near the top again, he wants wants City and Chelsea sent back to the stone ages (or at least Tier 3) for (allegedly) breaking the rules. That would be very helpful to Spurs.

I take your point if Spurs win the lottery when ENIC sells. Levy would have fucked Spurs - a bit - but it would hardly be catastrophic. See the progress Newcastle have made within FFP in only a couple of years.

Allegedly is a very big word. Just a polite reminder, rags, Everton and Dippers have broken the rules, not City.

Can you please explain this idea you are pushing that Spurs have been perennial relegation battlers? Since 2001 they have only finished outside of the top 10 once?

And this notion that City spend wildly, if you are buying a club to win trophies you have to invest to catch up to the top teams. 7 Premier League titles and champions league doesn’t look like wild spending to me. It’s a sound investment.

It’s interesting that Spurs made a loss of £83 million in 2021 and £50 million in 2022. The three year monitoring period limit is £105 million. They will be going like the clappers with the accountants to ensure that this years books don’t show any more losses than that otherwise a sanction could easily be applied. Not to mention that Spurs are one of the most up to their eyeballs in debt in world football with £853 million currently on the never never.

How do you expect your executives to turn that situation into championship material in the not too distant future?

Think selling Kane because he is home grown all that cash go straight on the books! Also levy charge one the highest amounts for season tickets match day tickets! Think they won't announce any losses there next accounts! Think they'll be able to buy spend around 100m this summer maybe more if they get champs league

Our Spursy friend doesn’t understand that financial fair play is creating a glass ceiling for his club which they can never punch through. They have to sell the family jewels to keep in line with the FFP breakevens. If Spurs have £100 million to spend it doesn’t really get you a lot one players like Nunes are going for £50 million, it’s not going to turn them into contenders is it? And champions league isn’t nailed on for them with Villa, Newcastle and even the rags having a resurgence if they bin off Ten Hag and get a new manager bounce.

Terry Venables the last manager to have won an FA Cup final for Spurs.
A game famous for Gascoigne getting stretchered off for being a thug.

Yeah agree.. Be interesting to see if they spend this January they do have a big squad but not a lot of quality and posto is good manager who will get more out of players!

I agree. It is a glass ceiling. That is the whole point of FFP.

Whilst I accept turnover isn't profit, it is a good indicator, and that suggests that Spurs have the 9th highest ceiling in world.

And if you take out the alleged delinquents of City, PSG, and Chelsea who Levy amongst many others hopes will be punished for their past behaviour and restricted in the future. Add in Barcelona who have their own mismanagement issue. That puts Spurs in the top 5 in the World.

That is a springboard for success.

And yes, I still think Spurs can win the title soon.

The only title they're winning any time soon is the Spursy King title.

Hoping to win by eliminating the competition by rules you had a hand in making up? Small time, bitter club.

You don't half spout some shite.

The earliest known use of the noun verbal diarrhoea is in the 1800s.

OED's earliest evidence for verbal diarrhoea is from 1808, in London Med. Review.
Yup had to be a London condition.
