anyone else noticed that a lot of pitches seem to be awful this season? i know this is a very cynical viewpoint, then again i'm a cynic. anyone think this may be down to tv companies? we are known as the fastest league in the world which brings more exciting and competitive football (allegedley) so clubs water pitches to ensure a faster paced game that might encourage a more ground based and attractive game.

whatever the reasons, many pitches have looked bloody awful this season. sunderlands pitch made an absolute fool of swp and his first touch most of the time, when he was'nt doing it to himself and wembley was a better example than that. i think clubs need to stop with all this turf business and actually let the grass grow and establish deep roots so the pitch is'nt torn to shreds with every tackle made

thoughts?

There was an article in one of the papers the other day about the state of grass in general. They're putting it down to the prolonged cold period, saying it's killed off grass down to the roots.
They illustrated it with 2 pictures of the cerne abbas giant. One was taken last March, showing the hill covered in lush green, t'other was taken last week showing all the grass to be yellow.

Nothing at all to do with the pitches being watered. The drainage on modern pitches is extremely effective these days.

It's down to the winter. Bear in mind, for almost a month, the temperate was below freezing point. Some pitches were covered in snow for prolonged periods (if a pitch was covered in snow, the snow was left there to keep the ground underneath warmer than it would be without the snow. Then a day or so before a game, the snow would be cleared and the undersoil heating turned on to keep the ground from freezing). Don't forget, the pitch is made of billions of blades of grass which have been trampled by a covering of snow. With the flacid growing conditions, the blades haven't been able to return to an upright position or been able to start growing again.

Basically, all pitches across all levels are suffering very badly. It doesn't matter how much money Sky pay, or how it's now 2010, grass still can't cope well under such bad conditions.

Even my lawn at home is suffering, and I look after that very well, and it doesn't have the wear and tear of a football pitch.

But don't worry mate, most groundsmen these days go to uni for a few years to do sports turf management. It ain't just some guy with a lawnmower. They'll be doing everything they can to get their pitches as good as they can get them.

Is this some sort of sick joke?

you got a fair point there mate bout the cold snap but i cant say i remember even sunday league pitches chopping up like that due to a bit of snow, maybe we just had good draingae in the area (south east, lots of chalk)

noticed it a few weeks back with the chelsea fa cup afternoon game, the commentators were in the studio at the bridge talking about the first game (chelsea was later on) and they had they hoses going for ages after we'd just come out of the cold and snow

They don't make playing surfaces like they used to...

But for the 2010/2011 season aren't MANUre having one half of the pitch green and t'other half yeller? The same for the goalposts, like a barber's pole but green and yeller!

cba reading all the posts but both these clubs share their pitches with Rugby League teams, which is the reason.

Didn't they have the "Horse of the Year show" on it just a couple of weeks before the game? There's nothing like forward planning; and that was nothing like forward planning!
