Doctor thinks I may have one.
Going for endoscopy in a couple of weeks he's put me on Omeprazole capsules.
Anyone got or had one on here.
I'm 50 have a reasonably healthy diet but am fond of a pint.
I had a few issues with my stomach a few years ago (mid 30s). The pain and discomfort was intermittent. I let it ride for several months (typical bloke). I then decided enough was enough so I dragged myself to the doctors. He sent me for a blood test and I was diagnosed as having H Pylori.
Luckily I did not have to have an endoscopy. I was given close to 200 pills to take over three weeks. The pharmacist was not happy with the prescription as one of the sets of pills I was given was an antibiotic mostly used for acne. I trust my doctor though as his specialism in Croatia was gastroenterology and he rang a doctor friend to discuss it.
I took Omeprazole for a couple of weeks or so after and then occasionally when I felt I would need it (e.g. if I was going to eat spicy food or raw onions). Remember, Omeprazole is best used as a preventative course of action, rather something you take to address the pain. To deal with pain, use something like Gaviscon.
If you have H Pylori a bit of advice (may apply in relation to other ulcers too):
- Avoid ibuprofen and NSAIDs (you get these in things like cold remedies)
- Buy supermarket versions of Gaviscon (half the price and same level of effectiveness). A large Gaviscon can cost £14 and you can go through it quickly
- Always have some Gaviscon (supermarket version) in the cupboard
- Always have a stock of Omeprazole. Ask for 20mg. 10mg and 5mg have about as much effect as a gnat farting into a gust of wind). Leave some at work and at home
- Buy Panadol as an alternative to Ibuprofen. If you must use Ibuprofen, take a 20mg of ibuprofen beforehand as well as a substantial meal
- If you suffer from heartburn, sleep on your left hand side
- Some antibiotics and steroids can cause issues, have a meal and take Omeprazole beforehand.
Over the next few years, I had two bouts of gastritis. One because I stupidly took ibuprofen on an empty stomach and after drinking a lot of alcohol. Then on another occasion, I unwillingly took something containing NSAIDs.
For a while, take Omeprazole before you eat something acidic, spicy or fatty.
I have not had a problem for several years. I eat what I want and I very rarely take Omeprazole. I have probably took it twice in two years (to take with antibiotics and some steroids) to prevent any issues. They were worked perfectly fine as I had no pain or discomfort at all
