Storm Babet

Those sort of low winter temps were quite common up until 90s. People just arnt used to them these days.

There is a dramatisation in weather forecasting these days. Yesterday SEPA were saying that the rainfall in Eastern Scotland would be unprecedented.

Which clearly means record breaking, let's wait and see shall we.

I will say this, record high temperatures in recent years have been worthy of weather warnings as they kill many many people.

Rainfall and wind events generally do not appear to be more frequent and record breaking. Although there have been execptions to that such as the heavy persistent rainfall in the lakes in 2009 and 2015.

Yes, if you look on the met office website you can quite clearly see it was colder between 61-90 compared to 91-20.

Cold weather has declined.

Storms are another story. The general consensus amongst scientists is that we'll have more frequent storms than previously but I'm not sure where I could find that type of data.

There were some ferocious storms in the 80s and 90s. The 87 one that hit southern England was bad. And the Burns Day storm of 1990 was very bad. I'm not sure we have had anything like the intensity of those two since.

I've only just found out that this "storm" was named after some lady who told someone a story about her being born during a storm.

Some c*nt at the Met Office gets paid for nonsense like this.

It's normal weather being exaggerated by softies for other softies who probably never leave their bedrooms in case they miss something on twatter.

Yeah, tell that the 350 households sleeping in community centres tonight.

Scotland haven’t had a red weather warning since 2015.

People might hate storms being named. It doesn’t stop them being deadly.

In weather pattern terms, 8 years is nothing.

The main problem is poor / ineffective planning by local councils. Building houses near rivers means an increased risk of localised flooding. It's common sense to ensure that (preferably over) adequate flood defences are in place, particularly where there's a history of floods in an area, as in this case. Penny pinching causes more problems than the weather.

We're living in the 21st century, not the 17th.
