Suella Braverman - sacked as Home Secretary (p394)

He pulled it apart bit by illegal bit. The Israel evidence was also illuminating.

I have to confess, while I had enough of a layman understanding to know that Rwanda was not a good 3rd country for refugees I wasn’t familiar with the particulars.

The idea that this government would be happy with the idea of potentially sending genuine refugees who have just fled a war zone to a fate like that is shameful. How could we ever again pretend to be better than countries like the Chinese with their treatment of Uighurs? Any perceived moral high ground (which is already built on decidedly shaky foundations) we would pretend to have as a nation would be completely dismantled - we’d basically be happily sending people who have done nothing wrong into death, torture and slavery.

Do we get our £140m back? There was an item yesterday on Look North(or Hull Today as I call it) about a very young girl who had been refused Cyctic Fibrosis treatment because it would cost £300k a year, how many treatments could we have got from that money.

Angry from Boston.

Pretty sure that HMG got entirely realistic advice on the merits of the appeal, but decided to run it anyway.
Home office lawyers and tory politicians would have known this from the start. Its all performative. They would rather spend 100s of millions doing this and then blaming lefty lawyers than deal with the political reality.

Important to note that the Supreme Court has ruled that the policy would be unlawful even outside of ECHR. Hopefully that deflates some of the hot air about joining Russia, et al. outside of that agreement.

Sue Ellen likely had notice of this a week or so ago and the tantrums are a direct result

Cleverly’s first task: “James, this UN thing that we’re part of. Do you reckon....”
