Swimming Thread

Back at the outdoor pool at Oasis Sports Centre in Covent Garden this morning. Managed 92 x 27.5m lengths which stacks up to 2530m.
Not sure if it's a London thing, but there were 3 old blokes who swam at the pace of turtles who thought it was a good idea to choose the medium rather than slow lane. Thankfully, the lane was wide enough for overtaking, but they never waited at the pool ends to give priority to faster swimmers and generally lacked any spatial awareness.
I'm not generally an angry chap, but I got a little bit of lane rage this morning!

Wish i could do cold water swimming , too scary with a disability , i do cold weather walking in a summer dress instead , love a zero degrees early morning walk all winter

Good intuition ^...a weighted rucksack or ankle weights would top-up your method

Buoyancy belts arent to be sniffed at...they cock you like a float in the water so you dont have to worry about your upper body...running in the water with giant hurdling strides is then a doddle...or backwards egg-beater kick to really work hip range of motion.

Returned to Nantwich Leisure Centre outdoor pool this morning.
It might have rained but I honestly didn't notice. Pool temperature was cold when I first entered but I soon acclimatised to it and warmed up after a couple of lengths.
There were about 10 other people as daft as me in the pool, so at least the lifeguard didn't have a wasted shift.
And I managed 84 x 30.48m (100ft) lengths so hit my 2500m+ target for the day.
What was the temp? I was swimming in the lake last weekend when it was about 18c.

Returned to Manchester Aquatics Centre this morning. I'd had a few beers last night (only had 4, but there was no way I was missing out on International Stout Day!) so really didn't feel like a swim.
Was hard work to start off with, but after a few lengths I felt much better and glad I went.
Ended up doing another 100 x 25m lengths, which was a lot more than I anticipated when entering the pool!
After a few beers, that’s well done.

Did my swim at the East Manchester Leisure Centre this morning as I had some bits and bobs I needed to buy from Decathlon afterwards.
I'm usually happy to stay in the double width "slow lane" here, but there was a couple swimming in tandem chatting therefore making overtaking impossible.
I therefore chose the single width "slow lane" but soon got stuck behind a lady doing a backstroke / butterfly hybrid (I didn't even know that was a thing), so shifted across to the "medium lane". There was a youngish guy in there doing super fast crawl, who I kept giving way for, but we soon decided to stay on our own side of the lane & that worked well.
Meanwhile, there was a couple of old guys swimming really slowly in the "fast lane". They weren't doing anyone any harm, but overall its probably the worst example of lane discipline I've seen anywhere in a long time!
Is that all that were in the pool? Half a dozen of you? What time was that?

Can’t believe I’ve not seen this thread!!

Not been swimming for a while this year but will definitely be back in the pool in the new year, had lessons to swim properly couple of years back after struggling during the swim legs on triathlons and was well worth it. Can do 2.4 miles now in 1:40 and no problems in open water.

I'm clearly not at your levels of fitness, but as a retired overweight bloke in his 50s, I find swimming to be the easiest and most enjoyable form of exercise. I cross train with a bit of running just so I'm using different parts of my body, and to keep things varied.
I'm not particularly fast, but I find once I get going, I can swim as long as I like, and it actually seems to get easier the further I swim.
I tend to choose to do lido swims in the warmer months as it's a much more enjoyable experience, and love to feel the sun on my back.
Outdoor swimming is divine

Just noticed that my local council sports centre has raised the number limit for adult only sessions (ie proper lane swimming for fitness) from 30 to 60 at a time. This is for three lanes.

I suspect it's down to financial pressures but I can't see it working.

I returned to Nantwich Leisure Centre this morning to swim in the outdoor brine pool for a last time this year before it gets mothballed for winter.
Despite the rain, there were several other swimmers of various ages and abilities present for my session. The water temperature was pleasant but not too warm, but clearly warmer than the air temperature given the amount of rising steam.
The only issue was the water being full of broken up leaf particles, which required a bit of concentration not to swallow or inhale any. When I showered post swim, loads of these leaf bits washed off me, so I must have looked like the creature from the lagoon when. I exited the pool!
Will concentrate on indoor swims until May, but will attempt a lido swim or two if I'm down in London in the coming months, where many of the pools remain open throughout the year.
Brine pool sounds interesting . There's an indoor one near me but it's only 10 m long ...I think Hathersage Lido is open all year . Hoping to swim in there over Christmas . I'm not keen on plant debris either
