Now we know Sweep is out for 5 weeks, who is going to fill the gaping hole he leaves in our first team?
Shaun's absence leaves us with one huge void to fill and we all know that we have a complete lack of depth to our squad, and I for one am not too keen on seeing Vassell plodding along hopelessly on our right wing for the next 5 weeks.
So after Vassell who is there?
The only name that floats to the brim of my cranium is;
Vladimir Weiss.
Now I'm all for bringing the youngsters through, I was at the youth cup final and saw Weiss play. I was throughly impressed by him and his performance on the day, and I came to the conclusion (as did many others) that he is a quality young player with a promising future. However I don't think he makes the grade for first team football as of yet. I was at his last game in the first team, the friendly against Stockport, and although he is without doubt very capable technically, physically he just doesn't make the grade as of yet. He didn't cope too well with the physicality of Stockport's game, and competetive Premier league football is a huge leap from a friendly against Stockport (bloody) County.
That said we are seriously lacking any natural wide players now Shaun has joined Petrov on the treatment table, also the friendly with Stockport was a good few months ago now, and I haven't seen Weiss since then and he may well have come closer in his physical development to being able cope with the demands of the Prem.
So what are our options, well for a start he can't be any worse than Vassell!
I'm not too sure... if he has put a bit of weight on, been doing well in the reserves, then I'm all for it. Give him the last half hour against Portsmouth in his favoured position, i.e. not left back (I really wouldn't be suprised), see how he does and then we could all make a better assessment of him.
Personally I think we should buy another right winger, just to fill Sweep's boots while he's out, and keep him on his toes while he's in. It would also help with our pathetic lack of strength in depth. Whatever you think of Weiss it is too much pressure for a young lad to fill Shaun's boots for 5 weeks at the highest level, especially when he hasn't played in a competitive first team game.
As for Vassell... he just doesn't make the grade. He is not even a natural wide player and thus is slightly *ahem* shite at playing there.
So for me we should buy an ageing, experienced, versatile player who could fill in a number of positions and make our squad as a whole a more respectable and quality unit.
Question is; who?
Or am I wrong entirely? Do you lot think which should stick with Vassell or give Weiss a crack of the whip?
