Nice to see a lot of recommendations for Northumberland.... so here's my list of just the 10 best places in my home county, and just outside...

1. Farne Islands, especially May/June when there are thousands of sea birds and seals

2. Lindisfarne / Holy Island

3. Druridge Bay

4. Cragside NT property, house and grounds

5. The Cheviots, and any of the wonderful, deserted valleys (College Valley, Harthope Valley, Upper Coquetdale, Breamish)

6. Beamish outdoor museum

7. Alnwick Castle and Gardens

8. Hadrian's Wall at Vindolanda, and a walk over Whin Sill past Crag Lough

9. The walk from Craster to Low Newton and back, past Dunstanburgh Castle, with a pint in the Ship Inn at Low Newton

10. Northumberlandia - the world's largest land sculpture

....although as I've written this list, I've thought of another 10!!

Was up that way for a weekend away with the missus a couple of weeks ago and have to say have never met a friendlier bunch of people anywhere.

Everyone was chatty and so helpful. Made z good break into a great one. Can't wait to go back

I've never really got on with Alnwick Garden, it always seemed a bit too novelty and safe for me. It can also be a bit pricey. That said, the family love it, they've some excellent specimens, the treehouses are very impressive and the poison garden is a nice gimmick. These days if I'm in Alnwick you have to drag me out of Barter Books in the old train station. open late every night and the biggest selection of Ladybird books I've ever seen (I'm a bit of a collector). You can also walk in with a carrier bag full of your old books and get credit to use in the shop. The cafe's also really good.

I love Barter books, I've lost many an hour in there.

Yorkshire is right up there, Devon maybe has it beat, too many beautiful places to pick just one county though

Northumbria is the only place in the world wetter than North Wales.

Fact.
As someone who lived in Manchester, Liverpool and the Yorkshire dales then moved to Northumberland I have to say it is colder but sunnier than any of those places and we have rain on 132 days of the year compared to 164 days in Manchester.

Northumberland rules. . Warkworth, Alnmouth and Embleton beach are breath taking. Finish off with fish and chips with a balm at Amble harbour. perfik!
