The ‘Beating You When Were Shit’ Thread

Jim Melrose had a strange City career, especially as it was his initial attempt that Grobelaar saved before Wilson pounced on the rebound
Pretty sure it was a Gordon Davies flick on from a throw in! Certainly don’t think it was saved by Grobelaar before it went in, but I wouldn’t swear to that. It was all a bit of a blur tbh, but I absolutely remember the Kippax was electric that day.

It was definitely a Grobelaar save from someone and the ball bounced up and Clive reacted quickest to get his head on it.

For lots of our supporters it isn’t bollocks at all. The last time we were outside the PL was nearly a quarter of a century ago. Many of our match going supporters have never seen us play outside the top flight, and so weren’t there when we were shit.
I was obviously talking about in general, that as a club we had more supporters going to matches than the clubs whose fans sing that to us.

I wouldn't swear to it either, but I seem to recall the initial throw-in being volleyed towards the middle of the penalty area (not dissimilar to Rivelino for Brazil's first goal in the 1970 World Cup Final (except that it was Kenny Clements and he didn't mean it) and subsequently wrong footing the Liverpool defence

I always remember it as a Davies, flick-on, but I've since checked a few newspaper reports and they all credit Melrose with the last touch, which was saved by Grobelaar

However, the ball definitely popped-up for Wilson to pounce with the Liverpool keeper still trying to get to his feet.

As you say, the celebrations on the Kippax were up there with the best I've experienced

Thanks. Like I said it was all a bit of a blur, but I’m happy to die on the hill that it was a Gordon Davies assist of sorts!
City's inconsistency had obviously spread to the Press Box with one report crediting McCarthy and Davies and the other crediting Clements and Melrose
However the Wilson header from the rebound is definitely the bit I remember

Chapeau for the research and completely agree about the part in the article on the left about City fans celebrating as if we had won the Cup!

It was packed in the Kippax that day and there was a huge surge when the goal went in. Actually went with my grandad who must have been around 80 at the time (he was born in 1905) and I’m amazed he survived it intact!

Just checked the crowd - 35,000 ffs! Swales was such a fucking wide boy.

One of the most disappointing games I ever attended, when we were good at being disappointing... St. Andrews, 1997, we go 0-1 up in 87th minute, and still lose 2-1...

I’m not keen on this chant.
Call me pedantic but isn’t this the answer to the question “what were city doing when we was shit”. Not where were we.

Turning up in bigger numbers than nearly every one of our opponents should be the answer. But I can’t come up with a decent lyric to express this.

We had a higher avg attendance than about 8 premier league teams.

Where were they when we were shit?
