The ‘Proper’ Treble

You could argue that the competition, back then, was much more of a level playing field, if not heavily weighted towards Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus who had unlimited spending power, and bought all the best players in the world.

United didn't have a monopoly on winning the PL. Infact, weren't even champions of England in the treble season. And Bayern Munich were the favourites going into that game.

Also, it was a feat that was accomplished with 7 academy players. 6 of them from Greater Manchester.

This makes the 99 treble a fairly unique occurrence, that probably will never be matched.

*grabs coat*
United were the richest club in World football in the 1998/99 season (just as they had been the season before, and the season before that). They had revenues of approximately double Juventus.

They had an unprecedented financial advantage domestically, with revenues more than double Arsenal's.

The '99 title was their 5th Premier League in 7 years, and they won the next two, to make it 7 in 9

The class of '92 stuff was impressive, but remember there were just 13 players from outside the British Isles who played on the first day of the 1992 season. Those United players came into the Premier League when plenty of teams still had local players, the best players didn't automatically go to the top teams, and the PL hadn't even started competing for the best players in Europe, never mind the World.

Shit in those days.

You could fail to win 15 games and win the league.
There’s no comparison… the way we did it was factually better. In a nutshell, no luck involved and a lot more convincing.

In the FA cup they had 2 replays. Arsenal missed a penalty in the last minute of the semi final and would’ve beaten them.

In the league they didn’t even break 80 points, and had one of the lowest points tallies of any PL champion. They drew 13 games in the season, and had a tally that would’ve seen them finish in 3rd place this season. It was a season, where they were the best of a bad bunch.

In the Champions league though, this is where they had a truly staggering amount of luck on their side.

1. They had a reasonably tough group with Bayern, Barca and Brondby. But they failed to beat both Bayern and Barca, drawing all the games, Brondby were the only team they beat and it was only good enough to finish second. But that didn’t mean they automatically got to the quarters back then (no last 16 then). There was 6 groups of 4 and the top 2 from all the runners up, went through.

- Real Madrid had the highest points of the runners up. Utd had the next best, but about 6 other teams could’ve beaten them to that. However, non of them won their final games. Benfica was a good example, they were going through until they conceded in the last minute to only draw and finish with 1 point less than Utd. So Utd had to rely on 6 other results going their away, in the last round of group games, and they all did. Which in essence, meant they qualified for the quarters as the second best losers.

2. They got lucky with their opponents in the Quarter final and the Semi finals in Inter and Juve. They were both weak as fuck. On paper they might’ve looked strong, Inter had won the UEFA cup the year before and Juventus had got to the CL final. But both had absolutely disastrous seasons, that make Chelsea and Liverpools season this year, seem ok.

- Inter went through 4 different managers that year! They finished only 8 points above the relegation zone and had one of the worst defences in the league. They conceded more goals than two of the teams relegated.

- Juve went through 2 different managers. They finished 7th and had one of the worst attacks in their league. They scored less goals than Bologna, who had finished just one point above the relegation zone.

- Despite this Utd still struggled to overcome both teams. Against Inter they won 2-0 at home, but away they could’ve and probably should’ve gone 2-0 down. They conceded first and should’ve given away a penalty, but somehow it wasn’t given. Then they scored an away goal on the break of play and sealed the tie.
- Against Juve they were outplayed for large parts of the tie and came from behind to win the game.

3. In the final they were again lucky, they went 1-0 down to Bayern. Bayern then hit the woodwork 3-4 times. Then obviously Utd scored those two last minute goals from corners, to win the game.

So yeah, their whole CL win was lucky from start to finish, to say the least. It was like one of those years where the best team in Europe, doesn’t actually win the trophy.

With ours CL win, there was no questions from anyone that we were the best team.

So to summarise, we won all of our trophies in more convincing fashion, we didn’t have to rely on any luck or referee decisions.

You know waaaayyyy to much about those cunts.

Rag.

Your name is statto .

Technically 129 years. But I'll let her off.

She's definitely wrong anyway because we've been in the CL for 12 years including this one and had 2 in the European Cup, so it's either 12 or 14 or 129 or 15 if you want to count since the takeover, but it's defnitely not 13.

Let the rags hold on to their "we did it first" tag.

We have: The first team to do the English Domestic and Continental Treble.

That'll do for me.
And potentially the only team in English top flight history to win the league four times in a row.

How many of the Treble teams were champions the previous season?

If I'm not mistaken, only Bayern (2020) and Inter (2010) were champions. Barca, United and Bayern (2013) weren't.

So, City are the only team in the top 2 leagues to win the Treble while defending the league title.

Also I’m sure in 1999 there were a lot of Micky mouse teams in the competition just to make up the numbers. Like Montpellier

I think there are many enjoyable aspects to out second treble. in particular this was a perfect V sign to the establishment. For a start we entered the CL as champions and in successive knock out rounds we eliminated Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and inter, the conquerors of AC Milan - the two who have won the cup more than any others and the conquerors of the third. Before there are any howls from Merseyside we eliminated them in the Carabao cup and hammerd them in the league at the Etihad. In the FA cup we eliminated those kings of financial prudence, Arsenal as well as Chelsea and outplayed the rags in the final. In the league it was curtains again for Arsenal (8 points clear at one point), who were runners up, and Manchester United, a long way back in third. In sum, we showed that the days of the old elite are over and we are now et the very top.

Did yers beat every team on way to title?? I know Everton in 1970 and 85 one of only a few team to do so.

I thought the odds were pretty close, what where they?
Arsenal (Viera, Bergkamp, Overmars, Anelka) were PL champions, and they were favourites for the title and the fa cup. It was deffo a 50/50 match up and the game went to a replay. United were underdogs in the quarter finals against Barcelona (Rivaldo, Figo, Kluivert) and the semi final against Juventus (Zidane, Del Piero, Davids, Conte) and then in the final against Bayern Munich. (Matthaus, Effenberg, Janker, Kuffour, Oliver Kahn...

United were the underdogs in most of those games but went on to win them against all odds, and with local boys like Scholes, Giggs, Gary Nevile, Phil Neville, Wes Brown, Nicky Butt and Beckham who joined on his 14th birthday.

Very very different achievements in comparison.

City coasted along in 3rd gear. Nobody else laid a glove or even came close. Gave Arsenal a headstart, selling them Jesus and Zinchenko, and Pep's assistant manager. And then batted them away when it mattered. It was a cakewalk.

Arsenal had great players but didn't have a great team in 98/99. Liverpool had great players, but were wank in 22/23, right? Arsenal won only 78 pts, this tells you everything you need to know how great they were. At that time the PL was generally worse than Serie A and La Liga. To win only 78/79 pts in the 3rd/4th best league in Europe is nothing special really.

United weren't favourites in the CL for a reason. They weren't brilliant, that's why they weren't favourites. They played vs Inter and Juventus before the final. Inter finished 8th in Serie A that season, and Juve 7th. So much for the quality of their European opponents. They had big names in their teams, but the teams weren't great. Just like Liverpool 22/23.

That second leg when the rags got through against Inter....... I was more upset about Rod Hull the day after than the result. He died falling from the roof of his house adjusting his TV antenna trying to get a decent reception for that match.

But yep .... we beat them something like 11-3 on those stats up there!. Will check again later.
