The Album Review Club - Week #197 (page 1330) - ???? - ????

Liked a lot of this playlist, culled some on grounds of familiarity to make it easier to pick a top five. Will try and do a guess later but here's my top songs.

DakhaBrakha - Monakh
Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band – New Threats From The Soul
Chase & Status - Baddadan
Family – The Weaver’s Answer
Mark William Lewis - Tomorrow Is Perfect

I feel huge family dysfunction at Christmas is more of an American thing or maybe I've just been lucky? Either way that's why The Delines just missed out despite really liking it.

Honourable mentions to Pixies, Albert King and High Fade all missing the cut on familiarity grounds.

I also had a bit of fun playing along to the Organauts :-)

No @Coatigan went free range, said everything in here rather than PMs. He's turned your military operation into a hippy commune ;-)

And still nobody bothered! Well apart from two, so now we have a tie for top song choice. But not so much on the guessing.

I'll sum up this afternoon once I get a minute. Then need to do the album of the year thread as well which I just havent got round to yet.

I've just got to nip in the loft but then I'll put in some guesses. Third would probably be my highest finish!

Just shows how hard it is running these things - I thought it was supposed to be guesses in here, top 5/10 in a PM :)
I actually revisited the directions again yesterday, unlike those still mulling about guesses after a certain event that I deliberately submitted prior to.

Kudos to you for getting yours in via either mechanism as well!

Any family gathering these days in the US has the ability to be a huge family dysfunction event.

Some may wish the topics in that song were all they had to deal with. I've been fortunately spared all of it, but I've heard stories not far off, and we'll leave it at that.

Couldn't decide if it was Bimbo or Journo stitching up Rob but went with Bimbo as it's his sort of song. As for the other various stich-ups I was in multiple minds.

Hope folk had a good break, and are ready to resume the albums proper in a couple of days.

Yeah I thought it being out in the open might have encouraged more discussion and spontaneous song praising/bashing.

But it is after all a festive break, so maybe good to recharge before the albums return.

As a side point, amongst his list of songs he liked, Rob did include Monakh. And they do technically - rap. ;)

So maybe, new year, new conviction bending. Who knows, I may yet get me that bolo tie before the year's out!

That Spinal Tap song has to be a joke
It was, but it was also a tribute to the late Rob Reiner.

I didn't see This Is Spinal Tap when it was first released in 1984, but back in the 1990's it would become a Christmas break tradition to watch and introduce my younger brothers to while home for the holidays. We would howl and laugh at that comedy played then on VHS, most of us in our 20s and them in their late teens at that time. I still reference that movie and film and recall the first time watching that (now-cancelable?) scene of that song performed from the movie with tears in my eyes that this was actually happening.

I felt it was my obligation to put out a Christmas holiday staple out there that I remember watching and laughing to from years ago in light of recent events. The success of This Is Spinal Tap also contributed to the wider acceptance of mock-documentary formats in mainstream media. Many and myself also consider it one of the greatest comedies of all time. Kudos to Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer along with Reiner who wrote and directed it for doing the heavy lifting for those laughs. Also Bruno Kirby, Ed Begley Jr., Danny Kortchmar, Fran Drescher, Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Howard Hesseman, Fred Willard, Anjelica Huston and others in minor rolls to help it along to be the classic it has become.

RIP an iconic actor (All in the Family), director (Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally..., Misery, A Few Good Men, and many others), producer, and screenwriter.

Very nice to keep my winning streak on these breaks continuing. A bit surprised I did that well, with spires doing well to throw me off the scent and with multiple of you lot liking Pixies. At one point I had 5 potentials there, so that was truly a "who is left?" situational guess.

I suppose I should just be thankful for not getting a next-round ban for missing Coatigan's top rated selection - thank you for putting this on over the break!

I put journolud on Mark William Lewis just because the vocals sounded a bit like the National, but what do I know? It was tough to get homerdog narrowed down despite having totally unrelated band clues in the Rock Evolution thread. mrbelfry will also probably always elude me, and OOB6 is another where I will struggle given the dart board is so large.

I'm most proud of my correct guess for BimboBob which was clearly a process of elimination having no info to go on otherwise. bennyboy was also a feeling once I had MCD pegged for the new holiday surprise for me from The Delines.

Back to my work for 1988 which appears to be coming down to the wire! ;-)

I am really pretty shit at clues. Btw Mrs S is not called Gloria so how come everyone guessed correct? ;-)
I can only answer for myself, but to answer your question, in all honesty, because you told me in June this past year... ;-)

Happy New Year folks belatedly. I had meant to get a response in but missed the deadline due to lamenting the sheer mediocrity of Liverpool at present...well that and everyone in the house being down with the flu.

I thought I had given the game away right at the start...you philistines....

It's PIXIES...
NOT...The Pixies.....
Claiming cutting and pasting is no excuse!
