nice one. I'm hopeless. My god I can't identify my Americana from my progressive country from my outlaw country from my folk.

As the Yorkshireman said, I know what I like an I like what I know.

I’m sure you don’t lose sleep over which genre a musician falls into. It can be a useful handle to help describe bands but so many produce songs that fit into multiple genres and go through phases. Genesis obviously went from prog to pop (of sorts).

Now the records I play of hers are from the latter part of her career, Wrecking Ball and Red Dirt Girl in particular (Americana). They are quite different to her early 'country' records which I like far less. So in a way it is useful when accurately applied to give the listener some prior indication as to what they will listen to. It would be interesting to apply a genre to each of our 132 choices to see their overall profile. I also feel the need for them to be in a spreadsheet so I can sort them into chronological order. But that's just me being sad.

I like the idea of a thread dedicated to 'the best year in music' with posters listing their favourite 3, 5 or 10 albums from that year and making a case for it being the strongest year in history. I think that might have legs.

Ok, I know what my next submission will be. An absolute peach from 1965. Another missing year.

I'm sure I don't. I do find it quite amusing/interesting though. Take Emmylou Harris, an artist that I really quite like. Now the records I play of hers are from the latter part of her career, Wrecking Ball and Red Dirt Girl in particular (Americana). They are quite different to her early 'country' records which I like far less. So in a way it is useful when accurately applied to give the listener some prior indication as to what they will listen to. It would be interesting to apply a genre to each of our 132 choices to see their overall profile. I also feel the need for them to be in a spreadsheet so I can sort them into chronological order. But that's just me being sad.

I like the idea of a thread dedicated to 'the best year in music' with posters listing their favourite 3, 5 or 10 albums from that year and making a case for it being the strongest year in history. I think that might have legs.

The Stones,Flying Burrito Bros and the Elvis Costello Almost Blue album along with the Gram and Emmylou stuff my first loves with a country sounding music.
In the 80's Jason and the Scorchers,Green on Red and The Long Riders was my cup of tea at the time.
Even early REM had an influence as well.

I did like Grevious Angel. My first flirtation with country was with Maria Muldaur’s waitress in a donut shop. I’m not even sure if it was country but I did like the album.
