The Album Review Club - Week #146 - (page 1935) - Ocean Rain - Echo and the Bunnymen

I love this album so much, they are so underrated the charlatans, they bang out these killer tunes and brilliant albums but don't really get any credit. I've seen them countless times and every time they was on point.

Fantastic mate.
I agree that they are underrated. They are the only “Madchester” band that I rate. I read somewhere recently that the difference between ordinary and great is the ability to repeatedly do something as opposed to just doing it once. They are the great survivors of a scene that, to be fair, I never had an interest in. But as I said in my write-up, Tellin’ Stories and Us and Us Only are two superb albums.

Feel free to drop in a score :)

Oopsy.

10 out of 10.

I'd give it 11 if I could :)

The Only One I Know is the only one I know by the Charlatans. Well, as far as I know.

I don’t know why I’ve never explored them further. That track by the way was on a compilation album that also had the much derided Supergrass’ Alright and Boo Radley’s Wake up Boo amongst many other great tracks and we played it regularly to our toddlers when they wanted a bit of “running up and down music”

Looking forward to listening to this and wonder if they’ll join some other recent picks in the “ooh they are better than I might have thought” category.

Slim pickings on the recent playlist for me I’m afraid and I didn’t put any guesses in as it would have been pointless and also some of those tracks I didn’t have the heart to associate any of you with, with apologies to whoever nominated them first time around and second.

Frightened Rabbit are probably nudging their way back into my consciousness and the War in Drugs are already firmly entrenched there. Apart from that one good and one not so from Idles but they could easily muscle in alongside the Killing Joke and Theatre of Hate I’ve been listening to when I want something a bit brutal.

Talk Talk remain the find of this thread for me but I felt a bit guilty nominating an 8 minute plus song but I needn’t have worried considering Mr Befry gave us one of the overdone clunkers from War of the Worlds with it’s comical inflections. If I had put guesses in I would have had mrbelfry nailed on for that given his perverse liking for it.

I had a Rodriguez track in reserve and listen to that album a lot. Strangely despite joining in on the positive vibes for J.J Cale I’ve never revisited it.

You provided some good cover for me, so much appreciated on your nomination. My initial song and still favourite from that album was "I Don't Believe In You", which had it stood over "The Pan Within", would have provided 2 songs from that album. It was close, but the fiddle won. Woo!

Perverse is apt. ;-) I was sampling the playlist on a road trip, and immediately had to hit "next track" in the car so as to minimize questions from the missus on what the heck mix I had going. "Who goes there?" indeed!

I have listened to it, and despite the enjoyment, it just wasn't going to bump any of my top 5.
